...because home doesn't happen overnight.

I’ve seen these “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters all over the place.

I have to admit, it may be a fad.  But I’m drawn to their simple design and message.  What mother of 2 boys wouldn’t want this poster hanging up in their living space reminding them to let the small stuff go?  (Like half-eaten broccoli chewed up and spit out onto the dining rug.)  Seriously, though, this mantra was put into production back in 1939 by the British government during World War II.  Over 2 million copies were made as a last ditch effort to strengthen resolve against the Nazis.  Only limited numbers ended up being distributed.  Then in 2000, a print was found in a second-hand British bookshop…with an expired copyright.  Thus, the mantra is now open to public replication.  And, boy, has it replicated.  I browsed Etsy for days in search of a print.  There were so many to choose from!  I decided on a lemongrass green one.  It took a while to ship, but I finally received it late last week and quickly hung it in the sunroom.

I mounted it in an archival frame with some cool Amy Butler printed fabric behind it.

Staying true to my new mantra, I didn’t even finish the fabric edges.  I left ’em raw and frayed.  I like it.  Imperfect perfection.

Plus, you can’t really tell from afar.

So maybe I did jump on the trendy “Keep Calm and Carry On” bandwagon, but it just may save my sanity some days.  Plus, there are worse things.

Keep calm, y’all.

Hello :)

I just came across your website and I love your post. I’ve been noticing these posters lately, too, and find them really intriguing. Thanks for sharing their history and your instructions. Also love your cool attitude…”Plus, there are worse things.”

You’ve inspired me to find my own version to hang in my office!

Hi there! Came over from YHL because of your fabulous laundry room stencil project. Now all I can think about is hiding my laundry room’s pipes!

I still really like the Keep Calm prints, and am seriously contemplating buying one on Etsy to hang on the nursery door. I’m expecting a boy in less than three months, and have a feeling that I’m going to need to repeat this mantra daily. :)

I too have been hesitant to jump on that “bandwagon” but darnit I like those posters. Who cares if it is a “fad”. I haven’t purchased one yet but am thinking I may now, I really like how you did it with the patterned fabric behind it!

Love your site! But can you please make the font a darker color? The palette is too light for me to read.

I’ve been seeing them everywhere too. Good to know I’m not going insane!

Just found your blog through Young House Love. You have a beautiful home! Look forward to seeing more post from you :)

Lori – I’ve found that if I like something enough and feel like it’s something I could live with for the long haul (whether it’s a fad or not), then I don’t really mind being grouped in with all the others that have it too. Great minds think alike, right?!

Elisabeth – I’ll work on getting the font darker so it’s easier to read. Thanks for the constructive criticism!! I see the font every day, so it’s nice to have a fresh eye look at it.

What a great little poster. I love what you did with the fabric background. The history of the poster makes it for me!
Came over to your blog after seeing your post in YHL. Will be back often.

Just ordered “Keep Calm and Eat A Cupcake” for my kitchen. Where did you get your frame? I’m looking for a lucite one as well. Thanks! Katie

Katie – I got my frameless frame at Hobby Lobby. I love art that speaks to people…especially when it tells me to eat a cupcake!

Katie!
Found your website by accident, on the hunt for the iconic British propaganda art…….on fabric. Have you seen it anywhere?
My hubby loves this phrase and I’d like to incorporate it onto a huge bulletin board for the wall behind his desk in our den. Got inspiration from a DIY site using foam insulation board, which you cover with whatever fabric you choose. I thought “Carry On” would be perfect. If I can’t find fabric, I would opt for just using the largest poster I can find, and maybe encasing it in plexiglass in the center. Any suggestions on how I could keep the plexiglass hanging……decorative nut/bolt, front to back in each corner perhaps?????
I live for your expertice!
Mwah!
