05.04.10 / Out to Lunch

Handy Hubby asked what I wanted for Mother’s Day.  Usually this is just a rhetorical question to which I don’t give any specific answer.  He’s pretty good at coming up with ideas on his own.  This year, however, I did what every husband out there wishes his spouse would do…I told Handy Hubby exactly what I wanted for Mother’s Day.  (In fact, I ordered it myself to save him the trouble and told him I’ll act surprised.)  You see, this is what I’ve been carrying my lunch in to work for the past 5 years…

Handy Hubby won this lunch box in a raffle at work several years ago.  It was free.  It had that going for it.  But that’s about it.  After years of use, the insulated lining has started to crack.

So, I hunted down a few possibilities on Etsy, the bestest of the best when it comes to homemade goodies.  I didn’t think too many lunch boxes/bags would pop up BUT, boy, was I wrong.  Here are some of my faves…

In the end, I couldn’t stop drooling over this one…

Uh, the linen.  And those cute-sy pears…4 in total…to remind me of Handy Hubby, our boys and myself.  Not to mention the 2 sandwich/snack bags and napkin that are included.  Sold.  At $40, it’s not exactly cheap.  But it’s my Mother’s Day gift, remember?  (I try to keep a running list of splurge items that I like but wouldn’t necessarily buy for myself.  It’s a great list to refer to when Handy Hubby or someone else needs a gift idea for me.)  Plus, with the reusable mini-bags and napkin, I’ll be saving money (and the Earth) in the long run by cutting back on Ziploc baggies.  And I decided to go the (dare I say it?!) organic route.  All items in this Perfect Pear lunch kit are made from organic linen and lined with food safe, waterproof nylon.  Now, this isn’t meant to be prescriptive…I’m not saying everyone needs to go out and buy an organic lunch box.  Just, for me, the thought of carrying my food – the stuff that’s going into my body – in something non-plastic, non-carcinogenic makes lunch sound more appetizing.

You may be wondering, “How is her food gonna stay cold until lunch time?”  Luckily, my employer has a refrigerator on site.  So, heavy-duty insulation isn’t a priority for me.  My food just has to make it through the drive to work and then I can stash my cold items in the fridge there.

So, there it is.  My Mother’s Day gift.  Do you think picking your own gift is narcissistic?  Or do you see it as a win-win situation?  Whatever the answer is, I’m sure looking forward to packing my lunch next week.

That’s totally a win-win situation! I have a couple sets of similar snack bags and just love them!

It’s so pretty! I tried to convince my fiance that the fur-babies should could for me for Mother’s Day, but he wasn’t going for it…

I have been wanting to purchase some reusable snack bags on Etsy, you’ll have to give us a review after you get some use out of them…

Oonafey – That’s a great idea! Maybe I’ll do a review after a few weeks of using it.
