...because home doesn't happen overnight.

***This giveaway is now closed.***

Just like most things house and home, we enjoy DIYing our family pics.  I really prefer candid photos versus the ones with fake scenery.  This year I had big plans to have them taken outside with nature in the background.  I got my younger sister to stop by on her Thanksgiving break {she’s in college} to snap the photos.  One problem…it was raining.  But it was our only chance to have a third party available as our photographer.  So, we just went with it.  I gave my sister a quick tutorial on my camera, slipped some rain boots on the boys and grabbed an umbrella.  Then we headed outside into the rain.  We didn’t make it too far – barely out of the driveway.  I gave the boys the umbrella as a prop {and a distraction}, told Handy Hubby to kiss me and told my sister to click away.  Handy Hubby joked that it was the most I’d kissed him in our last 8 years of marriage. {Funny, but not true.}  Four minutes later, we were back in the house.  Surprisingly, we got some good shots in that short amount of time.  {Thanks Nanny Lina!}  After a little editing and playing around over on Picnik, here’s what we ended up with.

It’s not perfect but neither are we…so why try to pretend?  Picnik is a great tool to improve the look of just about any photo.  You can resize and tweak all your pictures ’til your heart’s content. Then you can save them to your own computer or share them with friends.  All those collages you see on this blog?  Yep, I made them with the help of Picnik, too.  And today, Picnik is offering up a FREE upgrade to Picnik Premium which allows you to do more than simply resize, brighten and crop. You get access to a larger arsenal of fonts and special features {like those wintry snowflakes you see in the picture above}.  Sound like something you could use?  Great.  See the giveaway details below.

  • PRIZE:  one FREE year of Picnik Premium
  • RULES:  Must be at least 13 years of age to enter.  One entry per email address.  Live outside the U.S.?…that’s okay!
  • HOW TO ENTER:  Leave a comment on this post proclaiming “GOING ON A PICNIK”
  • DEADLINE:  Enter before Wednesday, December 8th @ 8:00 p.m. EST.  The winner will be picked at random and announced on Thursday, December 9th.
  • WHILE YOU’RE AT IT:  Besides picnics, tell me what else you’re missing about summer.  In a warmer weather climate right now?  Then tell me what you’re missing most about cooler weather.

Good luck!  And just for fun, here are some outtakes that didn’t make the final cut.  {Everett’s boots fell off about 12 times during our 4-minute photo shoot.}

FYI – I was not compensated in any way for this post.  I paid for my Picnik Premium upgrade with my own moolah and loved it enough to contact Picnik for a giveaway.

images:  all Nanny Lina, we love her!

I can tell you what I don’t miss about summer: Mosquitos. I do miss being able to eat outside when my wife & I go to Mellow Mushroom or being able to enjoy natural warmth.

I think the things I look forward to most about Winter would be snow (when we get it), hot chocolate & hiking socks.

Great photos!

GOING ON A PICNIK. Just welcomed our baby girl, so that makes winter a treat this year. Otherwise I’d be missing the extended daylight of summer. I’ve never been a fan of darkness at 6 pm, but now I’m enjoying it while I take my evening naps in preparation for the sleepless nights. : )

GOING ON A PICNIK!

We’ve finally dipped into the 60s here in South Central Texas. It *almost* feels like winter because the thermostat finally kicked on the heat instead of the A/C. I miss snowflakes. Not masses of snow, just flakes. :)

07.December.2010

GOING ON A PICNICK!

I don’t miss anything about summer. Wishing for snow!

08.December.2010

GOING ON A PICNIK!

First of all, your family photos–even the outtakes–are completely adorable. I’m jealous that you’re all so photogenic!

As for what I’m missing from the summer… I guess skin that’s not dried out and itchy. That’s always a problem for me in the winter. Doesn’t help that I tend to forget about lotion until after I’ve gotten dressed (and only remedy that about 1/2 the time…). Despite this though, I love ALL the seasons, so I definitely wouldn’t skip out on all the good stuff winter brings!

Wonderful as always!
Snow is on the way this weekend! I miss my flip-flops and showing of new pedicures! Boots are great but not nearly as fun.

So cute, Dana! Love it!

I love picnik! I do a little bit of photography, some portraits in my small town not to mention pictures of my 3 kids and I use picnik. It’s really the only good editing program I can afford! I have the premium account, this is my 2nd year with it now. I love your picture! Definately an inspiration for our family photo!
