...because home doesn't happen overnight.

*THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.*

Having two little kiddos and keeping one house for sale in tip-top shape while renovating another isn’t easy.  There’s a lot of “No!  Don’t touch that!” going on at both houses right now.  So, when Black & Decker generously offered to send us one of their Junior Power Tool Workshops to help ease the pain, I happily accepted the offer.

Handy Hubby assembled the kids’ workshop Saturday night in about 20 minutes flat.  I figured I should take of picture of him assembling it.  He wanted to put on a shirt but I told him not to worry about it.  It’d be good for the blog.  I like topless DIY…on Handy Hubby, not me of course.

Once he got it put together, he mentioned numerous times that he would’ve liked playing with something like it when he was little.  I think it’s something he’d like to play with now at age 33.  I watched him organize the tools and try each one.  In all honesty, I think he was playing.  The boys were ecstatic to find the workbench waiting for them in the garage the next morning.  Everett kept asking, “It’s a toy?”  I think he was half expecting to be told not to touch it.  I loaded the workbench into the car and we headed up to the Underdog to meet Handy Hubby to discuss some electrical details for the house.  The new toy worked out great and kept the kids occupied while we nailed down lighting, outlet and switch placements.  They especially liked the motorized circular saw and drill.

We decided to leave the workshop at the Underdog to give the boys something safe to play with whenever we’re working out there.  I think it makes them feel like they’re a part of the reno process.  If only they could run electric!

Anyhow, what does all this product placement mean for you?  Well, Black & Decker is in the midst of promoting their new electric and cordless yard tools.  Information on all the outdoor tools can be found at Recharge Your Yard.  With gas going for almost $4 a gallon, who wouldn’t be interested in checking out hassle-free yard products that allow more time and money for family, relaxation and entertaining?  Not only is Black & Decker hosting the Recharge Your Life sweepstakes on Facebook in which entrants have a chance at winning $4,000 worth of yard gear, they are kindly offering two more Junior Power Tool Workshops to TWO lucky House*Tweaking readers!!  Even if you don’t have kids yourself, maybe you have grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbor kids or a Handy Hubby that would appreciate this almost real life setup.  Here are the giveaway details:

  • PRIZE: two Black & Decker Junior Power Tool Workshops along with the informative Black & Decker DIY books, A Better Lawn and Landscape Projects, just in time for landscaping season.  That’s one workshop and two DIY books per winner!
  • RULES: must be at least 18 years old and have a street mailing address {no P.O. boxes} within the U.S. or Canada.  One entry per email address.
  • HOW TO ENTER: leave a comment on this post proclaiming “I WANNA PLAY!”
  • DEADLINE: enter before Friday, June 10th at 9:00 p.m. EST.  The TWO winners will be picked at random and announced on Monday, June 13th.
  • WHILE YOU’RE AT IT: Go ahead and reminisce about your favorite toy, character or game as a kid.  I was a Pogo Bal kid and I wanted to be She-Ra.  At the time, I didn’t realize how lame and dangerous the Pogo Bal was or how scantily clad She-Ra was.  Oh, to be a kid during the ’80’s.

Don’t forget to check out Black & Decker on Facebook or follow them on Twitter!

I WANNA PLAY!

Oh, and Strawberry Shortcake all the way…and while I never wanted the She-Ra doll, I did want her sword, or He-man’s. What can I say, my brothers were mean (not all the time – but I thought a sword would have helped) :)

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!!

I was an outdoors-y, bike riding kid – always trying to keep up with all the neighborhood boys, even though my sister and I weren’t as daring when it came to jumps and tricks. We also spent lots of time building “tree houses”, which were pretty much just random wood slats nailed to two tree branches so we could climb and sit. Also, lots of secret hide-and-seek in the neighbor’s yards!

Also, who didn’t love their Skip-It??

06.June.2011

I wanna play too! My favorite toy by far was strawberry shortcake. I still remember how she smelled!

I WANNA PLAY!

Actually, I’d really love to have the books and can definitely think of a kid or two (maybe even a big kid or two) that would love the tool bench.

We have lovely landscaping (so long as lovely means “looks like every commercially done retail outlet in town”) that was severely damaged in the April storms, so I have good motivation now to rip it out and personalize it… I just don’t know where to start.

I was always a coloring kid. And I wasn’t allowed to have a skip-it… They said I was too clumsy and would hurt myself… now I know that parents do know best, and they were probably right.

06.June.2011

I wanna play!!! We have been in our new home for a year now and we are constantly working to make it our own with a 17 month old underfoot. He loves “helping” daddy and I think he’d love his own little workbench!

I plan on doing the same thing with my son when he gets a bit older…but in the meantime I’d LOVE for him to have a workbench so he can “play” along with me and Daddy as we work around the house!! :)

And my hubby and I are decidedly NOT handy, with big plans for our yard, so the books would be a lifesaver.
My fondest memories of actual toys are computer games- Oregon Trail anyone?

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! I have two sisters, and we had so many Barbies. We loved to decorate homes for them (shoe box with wash cloth bedspread, etc.). We would beg to go to craft stores and come up with items we could repurpose for the Barbie family…and of course, once it was set up, no one could touch it.

06.June.2011

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! No seriously, maybe if I win this I can play with it until I conquer my fear of power tools. Oh and then I will let my daughter use it.

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!

We rode our bikes all over town growing up. I think my pink banana seat was my favorite toy. It had the handle bar streamers and those balls that you put on the spokes to make noise when you rode. Fun times!

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!
Growing up in the 80s, I loved playing with legos, barbies, and just romping about outside with my friends and siblings. One of these good friends from my youth has twin 3-year old boys, and another on the way; this would be my gift to her!

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!

So would my two boys who are 8 and 3. My 8-year old would like to use the real deal! But, I am sure he will be happy with this one.

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!!!

As a kid I totally wanted to be She-Ra too! Or Rainbow Brite!

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! My (future) grandkids would love this! I always played “house” when I was growing up. Mostly cooked, cleaned, and took care of my babies, but would have played with this if I knew about tools back then.

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! I loved my doll house and horses. I work at a preschool so I still get to play with a lot of toys! I saved most of mine and am waiting for a girl to share them with.

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!!!

I had too many toys I loved, but I probably played with my barbies every day. I cut their hair, made my own clothes for them with my tiny kid sewing machine, etc. Does anyone play with them anymore? I hope to win this. Our son LOVES playing with tools like his daddy does.

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! My little ponies were my favorites as a kid :)

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!!!! My son would LOVE this!!

I WANNA PLAY!

My favorite toys were the pots and pans in the cupboard. Isn’t it always the “non-toys” that kids want the most?

06.June.2011

“I WANNA PLAY!”

I LOVED She-Ra too! I had the mask, sword, shield, and cuffs and lived in those things! I used to eat dinner with the mask on! Glad to see another She-Ra fan!

I WANNA PLAY! I was a big fan of my brother’s toys: erector set, this remote controlled helicopter thing, 6-million-dollar-man action figure (doll)….Super fun giveaway – my kids would love to “tool” around with one!

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!

I don’t remember my favorite toy. I’m too old.

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! I must’ve been a Barbie gal, too – that’s what I most vividly remember playing with. Not the whole role-playing thing, but dressing her and Skipper up in a billion different outfits. We didn’t have a ton of toys – definitely not in the budget at that time – and I think my mom made a bunch of the Barbie clothes. Ahhh, memories. : )

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!!! And so does my two year old, he would love this! I was a huge fan of legos as a kid . .

06.June.2011

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!!! Everett’s comment is so funny, I can see my little boy saying the same thing. I loved my Big Wheel, except since it was made of plastic the wheels would wear down from slamming on the brakes and skidding down the street.

I WANNA PLAY!!! As a kid I love playing with my Barbie’s. Oh to be a kid again. All that freedom and no stress. They don’t realize how good they have it when they are young. ;-)

I WANNA PLAY! Actually, my three year old would LOVE this! Admittedly, he has most of the tools, but his very own tool bench would be amazing!

One of my favorite old school toys was the digital etch-a-sketch, I think it was called “The Animator.” Guess my career as a graphic designer had an early start :-)

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!

My son would just about explode, I think :)

06.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY !!! My 3 yr old would certainly want to play too. We are currently rehabbing a place ourselves. We ended up taking it down to the studs and every time we are over doing another project Aubrey picks up one of Daddy’s tool and tries to “help”. Granted she can work the leaf blower like nobody’s business but I have to draw the line at saws and drills. She would LOVE (and I would feel so much better) having her own tools to play with. THANKS!!!

My sister and I loved to play with Barbies! We would spend all day setting up this elaborate cruise ship or fancy ball, half the time we’d never actually get to playing.

I WANNA PLAY!
A few of my toys that I loved the most were my American Girls “Samantha” doll, my hot pink SkipIt – we used to all bring ours to school and see what number we could reach during both morning and noon recess…we also played Chinese jump rope almost every day. If I close my eyes it almost feels like I’m 9 again, I remember it so vividly!

About the B&D tool bench – I saw one last week at a garage sale for $15. I almost bought it but it was missing a few pieces. My 2 year old son would LOVE it. He’s obsessed with “fixing” things!

What a great little treat for your boys. Glad they feel included. I was always obsessed with The Horse Collection. Trotting my little plastic horse over jumps and tucking it away in the small cardboard stable. Those were the days!

07.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY! My dad is a mechanic/builds cars, so when I was little he built me a motorized toy car, painted it sparkly purple, attached me to the back of his racecar with some rope, and would pull me down the road. How’s THAT for dangerous??? Oh well, I made it through alive!

Ohhh I completely understand the “NO, don’t touch!” Our 18 month old is discovering how to squeeze herself into the smallest of spaces and open doors and cabinets despite the numerous baby proofing attempts. She has the cutest little play kitchen set she could care less about, she’d rather steal mommy or daddy’s hammer and have a whack at whatever is closest to her; oh how much fun this set would be! 07.June.2011

I WANNA PLAY!

I spent many hours playing with the Barbie Dream House I shared with my four sisters. We never actually “played Barbies” much. By the time the house was decorated to our liking and our Barbie dolls dressed to the hilt, we lost interest and moved on to something else. I also loved making “houses” in our woods. The floor covering was always moss we gathered to cover our “floors”. If only material acquisition were that easy now! Ha!
