Ever heard of Houzz? If not, then you should check it out. That is, if you like tons and tons of home design and decorating inspiration.

Houzz offers a huge compilation of photos from professionals, designers and architects alike. You can search through the database by style, space {wine cellars, anyone?} or keyword.

If you create an account {free of charge}, you can save images that spark your interest in Ideabooks to look back on for inspiration when decorating your own home. You can write up little notes attached to your saved Ideabook images to specify what exactly about the space caught your eye.

If you have heard of Houzz before now then you probably knew all that. But there’s more. Product Picks Ideabooks.

I’ve been an avid Houzz follower for over a year now and didn’t know a thing about the Product Picks…that is until Houzz contacted me and asked me to create my own Product Picks Ideabooks. Basically, Product Picks feature items {instead of entire room shots} that can be incorporated into the design of spaces. Of course, I jumped at the chance to become a member of the Houzz contributing team! How couldn’t I?

You may have already noticed the link on H*T’s side bar to my first Product Picks Ideabook, A Gender-Neutral Nursery. It’s a selection of products that I put together that would be appropriate for a boy or girl. Not only is it relevant to parents who choose not to find out the gender of their baby prior to the birth but also to families who plan on reusing nursery items from one child to the next. I wasn’t given a budget to work with and a few of the items reflect that {i.e. crib and chair}, so it’s more of a ‘dream’ nursery to me. Still, it’s meant to inspire an overall look.

And, yes, I do plan on referring to my gender-neutral Ideabook for our own nursery. Maybe not item-for-item but as a loose reference. So, for those of you who have been wondering and asking how I would approach the design of our unborn baby’s {boy or girl??} nursery, there you go! I definitely want to incorporate pieces that can follow baby through to his/her older years, and I want to avoid a theme of any kind. I really want the nursery to fit into the rest of our home but be sweet and warm and cozy too. Of course, our nursery will have to be completed on a budget. As much as I looooove that freakin’ awesome chair, it’s not going to happen. Neither is the modern crib. I’ll be working with what I’ve got to tweak an old crib {already on hand…the only baby thing we have leftover from our boys} and secondhand chair {hint} into affordable, stylish options for us. Stay tuned…

I’m set to create a Houzz Ideabook monthly and I’ll be linking to them on my sidebar and probably giving you a heads up about them in blog posts. You can follow me over on Houzz too if you want. I’m crazy excited about this newest venture. It’s fun. I have free reign – no forced themes. I find it way more fulfilling than I probably should.

So now that I’ve spilled the beans about my newest gig, I have a quick question for ya. Any requests for future Ideabooks? It could be as specific as ‘striped rugs’ or as broad as ‘family living.’ Have at it, peeps.

What wonderful new venture for you! We are getting ready to build a home (very very early stage) and I want to build the house we need. Just enough square footage, easy to clean surfaces, etc. so I have been excitedly following your Underdog. I want a white – black and gray decor with pops of accent colors. I like varied decors so here are my suggestions. . .
white paints, industrial design, craft room, laundry room, mud rooms (can hardly wait to see your dining/mud room with the laundry area done), kids bedrooms, curb appeal.

I love Houzz and like you, had no idea about the Product Picks idea book. I’ve been waffling about what to do with our basement — would love it to work for kids and adults as well as an office space for me, so I guess a multi-purpose room would be great to see.

I’d like to see a mudroom idea book! We’re doing over ours and I’m out of ideas…

I’d love to see one for knotty pine living rooms that don’t turn into a hunting lodge/county kitsch theme.

Never heard of Houzz but I will definitely check it out!! It looks awesome.

Awesome! This is my first time hearing about Houzz, but now I def have to check it out! I would love a shared workspace idea book…my husband and I share a home office and it could use some help!

so cool! I have a daughter turning 10, and it’s time to transition her room to more of a “tween” room. I’d love to see an Ideabook for that!

congratulations!! can’t wait to follow along there, too.

as for ideas—how about things to put over your mantel? ours is flanked by two sets of bookcases and i have no idea what to hang there. i tried a mirror (it reflected the ceiling fan—yuck). i tried large art (which felt forced) and a gallery (which seemed so busy with the bookcases). i do not want a tv up there. i’m stumped!

i also have the same issue with over the master headboard.

You have such a great aesthetic, maybe you can help me come up with ideas on how to make my living room small space feel bigger and brighter!! I live in the garden unit of an old building (built in 1893) and so my ceilings are only about 80 inches. My current furniture palate includes espresso wood and earthy textural browns (think leather and knubby, or ivory fur), plus the West Elm jute rug as my base. What can I do to visually make the ceiling look higher? How can I brighten up the room and add some color?

Good luck with this new gig! Hope you are hanging in there – you are so inspiring, not only from a productivity level, but also just from having a real family and keeping it together. Keep up the good work!

How about chandeliers for two-story entry or family room? Preferably in the mid-range budget :)

I have two boys ages 7 and 10. We would like to redo their very small room with a bunk bed and desk and much needed storage items. HELP!!! Also on a very tight budget.
Thanks Dana!!! I love your style, wit and charm!!!

I’d love to see a playroom, one designed for real play and kid fun. The ones I see often still look like an adult lives there…I have some ideas, but I love how functional you are about spaces and would love to see your take on a true play area for kiddos.

02.February.2012

How about sofa and chairs. I need to find good looking sofa and chairs that are comfortable and stylish and kid friendlyish.

Dana- I would love one on a neutral living room. I would love some ideas for mine!

I’m with Valerie – I would love to see a playroom. I would prefer ours not be over-the-top and themed, but I would like for it to be a “kid” space. Your ideas would be very appreciated!

A kid friendly living/family room with realistic flooring. I just replaced our off white wool area rug (once lovely now covered in dog pee stains and everything else) with a medium grey stainmaster area rug in hopes that it will stay looking reasonably ok for at least the 5 year warranty period. However, I can’t find many examples of decorating to emulate. Either the rooms l like have light carpets or sisal or they have dark formal rugs. Idea would be appreciated!

02.February.2012

yes, yes, yes! stylish contemporary rugs that won’t break the bank!

I’m such a lurker most of the time, but I wanted to take the time to say how much I’m enjoying following your renovation. My family and I are redoing a similar era house and I really like your style. I also admire your positive spirit as I know how wearing it can be with a husband who travels and being pregnant, etc. thanks for squeezing in the time to keep up your blog!
