Snippets of my week…

The fifth, pink laundry pile still catches me off guard.

Everett, a.k.a. Spiderman, enjoys playing in my childhood clubhouse. My dad built it himself 20+ years ago.

Since having Mabrey, I’ve gotten behind on my ‘homework.’ I could easily flip through the pages, scan the pictures, and toss ’em but I actually read every word so it takes me a while. In case you’re wondering, I subscribe to Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, and Elle Decor.

My poor kids need new socks and they’re {the socks, not the kids} the last thing on my to-do list. Luckily, Layne and Everett don’t seem to notice the holes.

I was a little worried about how Everett would adjust to becoming a big brother after Mabrey was born. He’d been the baby of the family for four years. HH and I have been pleasantly surprised by Everett’s love for his new baby sister. He plays the role of big brother well.

HH sold the boys’ platform beds via craigslist. I had picked out wooden bunk beds from IKEA for them but, when we got to the store, my decision was overridden. HH and the boys liked this metal version instead. It reminded me of an army bunk but came home with us anyway. I’ll make it work. P.S. – Yes, we were reprimanded by an employee for letting our kids get on the top bunk. That’s a no-no!

Mabrey is one month old! A friend of the family sent us a year’s worth of white onesies along with 1-12 month stickers to take her picture each month during her first year. For me, it’s a lot easier to slap the sticker on and snap a pic with my phone instead of photoshopping one on.

I hope you have a lovely weekend! I’ll be back next week to fill you in on all the recent Underdog undertakings.

Hello! I almost never comment anywhere, but I wanted to chime in and say that I love the new design, and I’m dying for updated underdog pics. I can’t believe what you’ve done with your underdog, and I love following you along the way. Thanks for sharing so much with us — you’ve become one of my favorite blogs to read!

Oh, the hair. Love!

04.May.2012

Can I please get Everett’s eyelashes, please? Holy MOLY is he going to be a heart breaker! :)

04.May.2012

Can’t believe a month already – she is so precious! Love the hair.

What a fantastic tree house! Your photos are like magazine shots, very cool.

OMG, Everett’s lashes! LOVE Mabrey crying shot (hope it was a fluke and she really is quiet!). Love the bunks….the safety mom side of me loves that they are lower. :)

And socks, smocks…………….ask someone to pick ’em up for you. You do not have to do everything yourself you know. OK, lecture over. (and btw–I suck at asking for help).

P.S. What typeface are you using for “House Tweaking” in the header and in the post titles? Love it!

Warning: My two youngest daughters have those exact same bunkbeds and they squeak terribly after the first year or so. Have oiled the spring platform that holds the mattresses but it continues. Cannot figure out for the heck of me where it is coming from.
I, also, wanted the wooded ones because my plan was to attach them to the wall (I have fears of them coming down) but was also overridden. Dad took daughters’ side and the vote was 3-1 and, unfortunately, I did not have veto power. Oh well.

What fun pictures! I love the one of Everett in your club house and the last one of Mabrey. She is such a doll and her hair is beautiful!!

I JUST found your blog (via apartment therapy). Amazing. Where have you been all my life? seriously, I’m going to be spending the next few days reading all of the posts I’ve missed out on.

Love Mabrey’s hair! Baby hair is so much fun to play with until it all falls out. My husband is a design addict and always has a stack of similar magazines on our kitchen table as well as the daily emails I get. I think he is thoroughly addicted.

Your children are so adorable. Mabrey looks like you? and Everett, those eyelashes. Wanted to say that my niece’s bajillion dollar NYC apartment is going to be in Elle Decor in August I believe. She had a panic attack after the photo shoot (literally) crying for days because something about a butter dish being left out (can’t that be photoshopped out?) and also that they made her sit and pose as if she were making a grocery list. “I never do that! The photos of me are awful!!!” We shall see. I can hardly wait to see it. Really enjoying your new blog style. And I love Jessica’s serenity bracelets. Very tempting. I’m sure I will give in at some point. Have a great weekend!

That picture is precious! What a gorgeous sweetheart :)

Look at the eyelashes on Everett, what a cutie!

Exciting news about your niece’s apartment being featured in Elle! Sorry to hear she was upset after the photo shoot but I’ll bet the pics turn out incredible. I’ve never seen anything but in Elle. I’ve always been skeptical of the way homeowners {especially kids} are portrayed – i.e. posed – in house tours in major publications. Everyone’s smiling in their best non-wrinkled clothes with a fully stocked kitchen and spotless interiors. We all know life isn’t that perfect. Still, it’s fun to look at!

I think it will be really nice. For her she was excited to have it photographed (it happens to be her sister in law who is some sort of something at elle) – my niece “married well” as they say. and has also chosen the big NYC life, works for Vera Wang, etc But all at the expense of her peace of mind and physical health. Lots of stress. As for the photo shoot, she was really upset at the staging. They took out her favorite pillows and added things they don’t even have in there!?! The same thing so often happens with writing. If something gets accepted for publication, it gets so highly edited that you hardly recognize your own writing. That’s why I love the blog world. Everyone sharing their lives in real ways – their own writing, their own photographs. Your blog is so fresh and real and unpretentious, and yet not TMI either. I thoroughly enjoy it. I’ve always felt bonded since we shared the same week on AT and am thrilled for your success.

I’ll have to ask Bre!

05.May.2012

Mabrey kept covering up the 1 month sticker with her hands, so I had to pry them away from her belly. She did NOT like that! Normally, she’s a pretty content baby. Is it bad that I like the crying picture?

05.May.2012

I get comments out in public all the time about my boys’ eyelashes. Layne and Everett both have very thick, long eyelashes framing their blue eyes. Must get ’em from HH because his eyes/eyelashes were one of the first things I noticed about him!

05.May.2012

Have a nice weekend too Millers ! Mine will be kind of interesting … off saturday but I’ll be working on Sunday and Monday (I’m a journalist and we’re having a new president ! That’s a big piece of news !!). Then, off again on Tuesday (veteran day for WW2) and I’ve to paint an armoire for my bathroom in the mix !
I looove Everett’s eyelashes and Mabrey’s hair but I adooore the sweet kiss between E. and M. !
ps : for my record, what’s TMI ? thankyouverymuch

05.May.2012

nope…..I love the crying picture! :)

06.May.2012

TMI = too much information :)

Love the adorable laundry pile. After almost 3 years it still gets me every time and is usually topped with a tutu in every color. Ahhh, the life with little girls! And dont’t worry, we almost get kicked out of ikea every single time we go…..the kids see “matress land” and go crazy! What can ya do?!?!

06.May.2012

Love all these pics….especially how the stack of pink laundry still catches you off gaurd :-) (I’m expecting our first girl in two months and I’m sure this will be my reaction too after having just a boy for so long!).

I was going to mention that our friends bought that same bunkbed and took it to an autobody shop and had it painted a different color (a pale blue) and I really liked the effect. Maybe something like that could help tweak it to fit your scheme for the room. But no matter what I’m sure their room is going to look amazing after you’re done with it! Don’t you love it when the majority overrides our decisions! :-)

07.May.2012

thanks Francine :)

08.May.2012

Hi Dana.
Would you be willing to show some of your recent purchases for your new home? I thought that was interesting when you did that last time.

08.May.2012

We just bought the same bunk bed for our girls who are 4 and 5. They love it and so do I.

09.May.2012

Adorable pics. Do you know where the onesie stickers are from? I am looking to do the monthly photos too for my future niece.

09.May.2012

I’ll ask!

09.May.2012

Yes! I’ve got one coming up. Sorry it’s been so long but other than project supplies, we haven’t really bought any other items. Once we’re moved in, I’ll bet the ‘recent purchases’ posts will become more frequent.

22.May.2012

Dana, what was your overall assessment on those platform beds that you Craigslisted? We have a third child on the way, and our two toddler boys will be sharing a room. I’ve always had these beds filed away in the back of my mind – did they hold up well to two rambuctious little boys?

22.May.2012

I LOVED those platform beds!! They served us well and I pictured them going off to college with our boys. However, with our little baby surprise, our boys will share a bedroom now and bunk beds will provide them with more floor space to play. So we sold the platform beds. If you do end up getting one, I’d highly recommend spending the extra money for the two drawers underneath. One of the two we had was drawer-less and I wish we would have gotten them both with drawers. It was a great place to put the kids’ pj’s, undies and socks so they could reach them by themselves and get dressed for bed easily.
