04.11.13 / The Kitchen Blues

Some of my favorite bloggers have a case of the kitchen blues.

John and Sherry of Young House Love recently painted their kitchen walls a happy blue. The blue-gray walls play nicely with the white cabinets, warm wood tones, gray accents and bursts of cheerful color.

Lauren Liess of Pure Style Home is using blue bead board in a client’s kitchen. I think it gives the farmhouse style kitchen a youthful feel.

Chris and Julia are in the midst of a complete kitchen overhaul. They updated their existing cabinetry with new paint – white on the upper cabinets and sophisticated navy on the base cabinets. I’ll be checking in on them tomorrow to sneak a peek at their new walnut countertops which are sure to look rich and handsome next to the navy.

What do you think of using blue paint in the kitchen? Would you try it? Where? Walls, backsplash or cabinets?

I would totally add some navy to my kitchen. At the moment I live in an apartment and I really don’t think they would appreciate coming in and finding that I had painted their cabinets (but I totally would if I could). All my kitchen accessories are either red (like my mixer) or orange (I’m a sucker for Rachel Ray’s stuff) and I think it would be great to have a deep navy as a base color for them to pop off of.

Blue photographs well and I used to be in love with an ice blue kitchen. Right now, it’s a gorge guacamole green with wood cabinets and I’m smitten. However, we’re due for a kitchen remodel (cabs from ’56 aren’t cutting it, sadly), and I may change the color to work better with food photgraphy to a blue or gray.

Not the biggest blue fan…. however I did just paint my boys’ bathroom Gravel Gray by Ben Moore and I love it! Very fitting for 2 boys – added with gray accents and crisp white… its so handsome and rich!

I have painted my all white kitchen with the most subtle blue, its not a dreary blue, but its not a ‘its a boy blue’ and it almost looks white. thats my take!

Hi Dana.
I painted my kitchen walls blue (with white cabinets) – the color was actually inspired by John and Sherrys guest room ;)
You can see it on my blog here:

Oh I love the navy cabinets! We recently repainted our kitchen walls a darkish blue and really love it. https://engineeringahome.wordpress.com/2013/01/16/in-the-kitchen-paintin-it-up/

I suppose I would have to say I like this blue trend because instead of painting my kitchen cabinets gray, they turned out a little blue! Thanks for sharing and making me feel a little better:)

Our kitchen is blue, with white cabinets, stainless accents, and (future) butcher block counters. The blue is SW 6502 Loch Blue, which is pretty dark. It’s offset with some bright white beadboard wainscoting. I’ve accented with red for the small appliances. I would say it’s the room in the house that feels the most like “me”. I also painted our bathroom cabinets with the same color!

We’re in the middle of a reno and are planning to paint the lowers hale navy. If I can ever get our countertop guy to show up and measure :)

I’m painting my kitchen a happy aqua color with leaf green accents in the next couple weeks. I keep procrastinating painting because I’m intimidated about cutting in around the cabinets and counter tops. I’ve enlisted my brother to help with that part, now just to coordinate our schedules!

We ordered our kitchen cabinets finished in a dark inky blue-it’s still my favorite thing in the house!

Your kitchen is looking great!

Lovely!

I wouldn’t do blue cabinetry or backsplash in my own home, but I would go blue on the walls – either very soft or very deep, but not mid-tone. We currently have 3 rooms painted different blues, but not the kitchen.

I have not been liking most of these blues. I like the dark and moody storm-blue that Jenny from LGN did her kitchen cabinets, and the blue-greens that we’ve been seeing a lot of… but man, the YHL etc. color paint choice is so 80’s to me. That dusty blue? No. Sorry.

I love blue in the kitchen! We painted our walls a rich navy blue and they look awesome with our white and grey painted cabinets. I think it just depends on which blue you use. You can check out our color choice if you’d like:

I love blue in kitchens! During our recent kitchen revamp I painted our walls a rich navy blue and they go very well with our white and grey cabinets. I think it really just depends on which hue you go with. I tend to gravitate toward richer/deeper tones of blue, though. You can take a peek at our blue kitchen if you’d like.

I love blue in any room! I introduced blue to my kitchen with a desk I painted blue and turned into a kitchen cart :) I can easily paint it another color if I get tired of it. Love your blog!
