bookcase

Since posting about the boys’ new Lego table, I’ve spray painted the library lamps on the bookcases. {I told you I have a serious problem leaving store bought furniture and accessories alone.} Even though the bookcases aren’t done, the gold lamps are a huge improvement so I thought I’d share a picture and sources. Many of you are very curious about those bookcases!

bookcase look

1 – The best thing about these woven baskets is that they have felt strips on the bottoms to protect the bookcase shelves. Three of them are a perfect fit for one shelf. Mixing the lighter rattan in with the darker finish of the bookcase adds color and texture. They hold toys, costumes and puzzles yet many are still empty!

2 – I originally bought a pair of these gray task lamps for our bedroom but they didn’t work out. On a “make ’em work” whim, I threw them on top of the boys’ bookcases and, behold!, library lamps. They are bottom heavy and very sturdy so there’s no fear of them toppling over even when adjusted all the way down. The cords are too short to reach our wall outlets so I added extension cords which are hidden behind the baskets.

3 – These industrial bookcases look more expensive than they really are. I bought two of them on sale months ago and they are currently marked down to $82! They aren’t the best quality {they feel much lighter than they look like they should – hence the drastic price cut} so you can’t display very heavy items on them but they are sufficient for what we need in the boys’ room. HH attached them to the wall for added support and safety.

4 – The gray library  lamps were getting lost against the taupe walls. A few coats of this gold spray paint were all they needed to make them pop and add a little luxe to the kid space. If it seems like I’ve been spray painting everything gold, it’s because I have been. I wouldn’t be surprised if you can see a cloud of gold spray paint coming up from behind our house.

I’m working on styling the two higher shelves. Some of you chuckled when I mentioned styling the boys’ shelves but don’t worry, they will be kid-friendly. Like I said, the lower shelves with the baskets hold things that get used frequently – toys, games, costumes, etc. I’m thinking the higher shelves would be a good place to store less popular items and display art for personality and COLOR. We need some color in this room!

Ikea has the BEST baskets!! I picked up several on my last trek there and they’ve seriously come in handy! I’ve never tried gold spray paint, but I feel a project coming on…

I love those bookcases in the boys room. And who doesn’t need a little more gold in their life? Those lamps look gorgeous up there.

I love the look you have going in here. It reminds me a lot of my second boy. I can’t wait to do his room!

Ah, this is perfect for a boys’ room! I did our little guy’s nursery in mint green with cutesy banners, etc, but I’m thinking it needs a change. We’re facing a possible move and his room in our next house will definitely be inspired by your boys’ room. It’s awesome!

Such a cute boys’ room!

Thanks for the heads-up on the bookcase price. I rushed right out and got the last one in stock in my area. I had looked at it before and had forgotten about it with all of the summer activities going on. I can finally finish my son’s room now.

I have a daughter, and she has lots of toys and books and other miscellaneous stuff that is just laying around the house. I’ve been trying to think of some ideas on what I can do to solve this.. and then I came upon this. Great idea! Thanks for adding a link to the individual products you used, specifically the bookcase. There’s a World Market not too far from my house.

I think I am going to copy this idea for her room.. but just add some pink to it.

I just picked up one of these shelves from our World Market. I called and the employee said “oh, those have a wait list of like a hundred people.” But then she found the floor model that one had taken and gave me a few hours to come pick it up. Of course, it wound up not fitting in my car but I paid for it – the store offered to disassemble it for $20 which I jumped on. Then the manager came over and waived the charge! It was one of my first times shopping in the store – but I’ll definitely go back just because of their customer service. I’m a BIT disappointed by the flimsiness of it – but I’ll make it work. Especially for $82!!!!

Do you have any tips or advice on spray painting metal lamps the right way? I bought two brushed nickel swing-arm wall sconces to go beside our master bed (actually, inspired by your Wayfair lamps, but these are from Overstock and less expensive), and I want to make them gold like yours. Before I possibly throw away $150 by screwing it up, I’d love to get some pointers on making them turn out as best they can! Thank you!

Dana, I love the lamp!! lately I’ve been on a gold spray paint frenzy… i think these came out really nice! how do you reach up there to turn them on?

17.July.2013

The lamps turn out great! thanks for the inspiration I have a lamp I don’t use because I don’t like the color so…. I’ll go a buy myself some spray paint :)

I’m always looking for ways to store our kids toys. This is a great idea! I’m excited to see where you take the styling for the upper shelves!

I love those bookcases and love that they are marked down in price. But unfortunately they are no longer available online. I even called some stores that had them in stock but they don’t ship out of store. Oh well. They look great in your boys room.

I love the gold lamps and the rug. It looks like a comfy winter jumper, are they Flor tiles or a rug?

18.July.2013

Flor tiles!

18.July.2013

The switch is actually a button right on top of the lamp’s shade. I can reach it easily {I’m 5’3″} but it is out of the kids’ reach.

18.July.2013

Yeah, like I said, they aren’t the best quality but I think they are just fine for our boys’ room.

18.July.2013

Oh man, jealous of the bookcases! I’ve been trying to track two of those down and they’re sold out everywhere because of the awesome price – EXCEPT at one local World Market that refuses to lower the price. Apparently sale prices are at store managers’ discretion? I never knew. Anyway, good find. Makes me feel a little better that the quality isn’t all that anyway. :)

I agree with Abby! Can you give us some tips on spray painting lamps? I’m in process of decorating a 16 yr old boy’s room {my husband and I are becoming guardians} and I was unsure if my silver desk lamp could be turned gold, and I only found one unhelpful tutorial :( Thanks! Love your blog!

I just scored this shelf for my boys room! It was on sale and I had a 15% off coupon which brought the price down to $70. I was gonna make one in a similar style but for this price I will save myself some time and effort. I am so stoked.

The woven baskets are such a great idea for the bookcases. I just posted about styling our bookcase today and now am thinking this idea would be perfect for the bottom shelf.

This looks fantastic! I love that you used a “real” lamp up top… I would’ve never have known!

20.July.2013

The baskets are best for toys because they’re not breakable. I like how simple the shelf yet elegant.

Dana,

Can you please tell me where the gray rug is from? I love it for my son’s room!
Thank you,
Hillary

It’s a rug pieced together using the sweater weather Flor tiles in gray.

Where did you get the carpet squares? Also the leather couch in your living room- LOVE!! Thanks for taking the time to post and for the inspiration. You’re so right: home doesn’t happen overnight!!

The rug is made up of Flor tiles – the sweater weather style.
