01.10.14 / Made Me Smile

read by fire 2

In the past, I’ve been horrible at signing off for the weekend but I think it’s a nice way to say “until next time, friends!” I’m making an effort to do just that with a little Friday roundup of things that made me smile.

*Per the recommendation of my friend Belinda, I gifted myself The Family at Home: Love. Life. Style. Some of my favorite moments this week have been spent sitting in front of the fireplace reading this book. It’s a great one for design-minded families.

*Lauren’s vow to be more like Deb.

*Kylie’s home office in a hallway complete with $2 chair and $7 lamp!

*A happy red stapler for my desk.

*This modern organic home tour is “dream home” status to me. Those built-ins!

*Steve gave me this book for Christmas. It’s a collection of short stories from James  Thurber including “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”. (Gotta read the story before I see the movie!) So happy to read an author from Ohio who had a quirky imagination in his adult life.

*My kids’ winter break was extended by two more days due to inclement weather. I got desperate and resorted to dressing up in costumes to preserve my sanity. The jury is still out on whether or not I succeeded but at least the kids had a good laugh.

I hope you take the time to do something that makes you smile this weekend.

My husband and I are putting in new hickory floors this weekend in our kitchen and dining room. I certainly hope I smile when it’s done and over! Right now this renovation is very scary because there’s a lot of plywood, dust, and punched out drywall that’s causing a ton of anxiety. Here’s to the weekend!

My goal for the new year is to get organized and finish projects! I am starting in the office this weekend and looking forward to being able to find my supplies. lol.

I know this is a random question to ask on a home style blog… but those socks. I love them. Where did you get them?

That is the cutest darn photo Dana!

I hope your book has The Day the Dam Broke and The Night the Bed Fell and The Night the Ghost Got In. And The Catbird Seat…that scene in Mrs. Barrows apartment ha. I’ve always loved those.

Old Navy! I’ve been living in them + leggings all week. I’ve been thinking of featuring maybe one fashion-related post a month. It wouldn’t be anything too over the top…I chase three kids around most days. Do you think this is something that would be well-received even though this is technically a home blog?

Did you know that Swingline did not make red staplers until three years after the release of the movie Office Space? Milton’s infamous red stapler from the movie was actually just a prop that was tweaked with car paint and a Swingline logo (with their blessing). Thought you might enjoy that little bit of trivia :)

Awesome. The product description on Amazon hints at the Office Space reference and is pretty hysterical itself. Made me smile ;)

I wouldn’t mind one bit! I love all the fashion related posts you have done in the past.

Yes- do it! Because you are a mom with three kids!

I read fashion blogs about as much as I read home blogs, and I certainly wouldn’t mind some overlap!

Love this post! Would love a fashion post here and there!

10.January.2014

I *LOVE* end of the week round-up posts, so thx/yay for yours!

oh how cute are you?! It’s a great book, right? After I mentioned it to you, I googled the author, Anita, to see what she was up to and was devastated to discover her daughter – who features in the book – had passed away in 2012. I can’t even comprehend how she is still functioning…. so sad.

11.January.2014

oh sheesh, I’m such a downer aren’t I? Just realised how happy and sweet your post was and I go and ruin it with that news. sorry! xx

11.January.2014

Oh no, that is devastating! My heart goes out to her and her family. I can’t imagine. For what it’s worth, I’m REALLY enjoying her book.

11.January.2014

You are absolutely adorable!!! Love reading your blog! I definitely think a fashion related post would be well received!! I’m dying to know where you got that scarf!!

12.January.2014

I immediately noticed the socks, too! Fashion posts for moms would be great. I love fashion blogs, but then I think “where the heck am I going to where that?”

13.January.2014

That’s exactly how I feel. I don’t read fashion blogs regularly for that exact reason. They really aren’t practical for a mom of three in Ohio whose highlight of the day is going to Target. I do think there is a void in the fashion blog world. What can moms wear at home on a day-to-day basis that makes them feel comfy and cute but still allows them to chase after kids and doesn’t break the bank?

13.January.2014

As soon as I finished reading the post on Friday I clicked the link for Anita’s book and purchased a copy for myself! Can’t wait for it to arrive, especially since I’ve been really craving a more functional/stylish home that incorporates all the paraphernalia that accompanies 3 young children. Every night we do the “toy round-up” once the girls are in bed! IKEA’s Trofast storage system has been a life-saver!!

The Night the Bed Fell on Father and More Alarms in the Night are my two favorites. A Thurber Carnival has been passed down as a family favorite from my great-grandmother. We used to read the stories aloud to one another as kids. Love, love, LOVE James Thurber!
