...because home doesn't happen overnight.

It’s official. We have a deadline for the main bathroom. My sister is coming to stay with us in about a month and it would be really nice to have two fully functioning bathrooms by then…if not sooner. Vanity installation is in full swing and I’m already thinking about fun little things like a mirror, shower curtain, wall hooks and towels. I’ve been looking at a lot of pictures of bathrooms online lately and something struck me.

modern bathroom

Have you ever wondered where the ventilation fan is in minimal bathrooms like this one? These are the menial things I waste my time thinking about. We have a recessed light over the shower / tub area and a separate box fan in each of our bathrooms. They’re definitely an improvement compared to what was there before. (Nothing.) But when I take pictures of the bathrooms I notice the fans. Such buggy lil’ eyesores.

Our friends are remodeling their master bathroom and they mentioned a bathroom fan disguised as a recessed light. Say what?! Apparently, Steve and I have been living under a rock. Had we known about this clever fan a couple of years ago we definitely would have incorporated it in the bathroom renovations. I’m putting it on the “next house” list. Ha!

Did you know about the sneaky fan / light thing? Why didn’t you tell me?! I did some checking and it looks like there’s an LED version available now, too. Gah!

Get OUT!! Apparently I have been living under the same rock. Thank you for the heads up!

It’s also called Photoshop! Most architectural photographers I’ve worked with will remove eyesores like a bathroom ventilation fan. :)

They probably just photoshop the fans out. I am a real estate photographer and do it for my shots of high end bathrooms!

I knew about the light/fan combo, but I didn’t know about it in a recessed light…that’s pretty cool!

We’ve had one for about 14 years. When we moved in the people had a light and a fan in the ceiling. We bought a combo fan recessed light and drywalled over the other extra light. And….the light is infrared. BONUS! We replaced recently because after over a decade the poor fan started to sound like a helicopter over the bathroom. With the new one, it is so quiet that I sometimes have to look at the switch to make sure it’s on. I couldn’t live without it. We have a different one in another bathroom that is a light/fan/heater (and it blows warm air) combo. But that one looks like more like a vent.

We are JUST getting ready to start our bathroom reno and had this same conversation yesterday! Thanks for the tip!!!

Say what!? Oh how I wish I had known during our remodel!

brilliant find!

We just renovated our bathroom and saw the option for the recessed light/fan combo. I forget exactly why we chose not to use it, but I think it was either inefficient or loud. Whatever it was, it discouraged use from choosing it as our ventilation source.

I am intrigued by this gadget:

Haven’t found anyone who has one, but I’m dying to find out if it’s as cool as it sounds!

Most (maybe all??) states’ code regulations do not require a ventilation fan in a bathroom with a window!

Infrared?! Heat?! I hope someone invents one that cleans toilets, too.

Oh, you’re so sneaky!

Buyer beware on these fan/lights! We have one in our bathroom and although it does look great, it is not very powerful. It is rated high in terms of power but it is just not very effective. We have plans to add a second, more traditional fan in the spring. Our fan is placed in the shower which may be part of the issue. Perhaps if it was outside the shower, over the mirror, it would be able to keep up a bit better. Good luck if you decide to go this route!

Fancy! I’ve seen them at hotels but never thought twice about them for residential use. So fancy, and I hope they continue to work on these so they work better than your other commenters have reported!

This is so wonderful! My brother is in the middle of a bathroom renovation and we were discussing this exact issue! So many fans are so UGLY! My brother has a very clean design esthetic and this is the perfect solution! THANK YOU!!

YES!!! We have “can fans” in our beach home… I didn’t know they were a thing either until our builder mentioned them…. they are SO AWESOME!!!

My husband just came home from Lowes with one last night. I didn’t even know they existed. He installed it last night and it is awesome! So much better than a big fan!
