...because home doesn't happen overnight.
05.06.15 / Studio News!

For a reason that I have yet to figure out, the studio of my dreams wasn’t meant to be. To make a long, drawn out story short, the current tenants decided to keep the 350 square feet of dreamy light which was a shock to the landlord and, of course, me. “I wouldn’t have shown you the space had I known they were going to keep it beyond the first month,” the landlord told me. Current tenants get first dibs.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Not willing to let go of the space so easily, I approached the current tenants (who have been holding on to the space – empty and unused – for 3 months) to plead my case in the kindest, most I-don’t-want-to-step-on-anyone’s-toes sort of way. They were super nice but it was a no-go. The tenants rent a much larger space in the same building and aren’t exactly sure what they will do with the smaller space. Office? Conference room? Storage? And so it sits – empty and unused – which is probably the hardest part of the whole thing for me. To know that corner room on the second floor with its easy access, modest size and amazing windows isn’t being put to use kills me.

News of the studio being a no-go came just before Everett’s accident. After the accident, my priorities shifted. I tried not to think about the space, but it was still on my mind a lot. I felt guilty for thinking about a studio while Everett healed but, eventually, I realized this was something I really wanted. Taking a cue from strong Everett, I picked myself up out of the stupid hole of self pity I had dug and started looking for another space.

I encountered the same problems I had when I first started looking: too expensive, too dark, no creative freedom. Last week I finally secured a new space on the same property (different building) as the dream space. It isn’t perfect. It’s dirty, gritty, rough, raw. At 1,000 square feet, it’s much larger than I need. The landlord felt so badly about the first space falling through that she was willing to come down quite a bit on rent which put it in my price range. I decided to take it and make it work.

The room does have some great attributes. The ceilings are crazy high. I haven’t measured them but they’re at least 20′. Two 2-story windows face west and let in a good amount of natural light. Access to the room is via a loading dock which means I can easily pull my car up to the room’s double doors and unload materials for projects. (This also means it isn’t all that great for public access. Having visitors enter through a loading dock is a little scary.) There’s plenty of room to spread out and have several projects going at once. At first, I was put off by all the space but now I think it will be nice for the kids to have room to play while I work. And there is a good amount of empty wall space to serve as photo backdrops.

The room was a dance studio (with an interesting paint scheme) in a previous life. Although, the tenants were evicted because they did more partying than dancing. As a result, the room needs drywall work (partying + dancing = holes in the walls) and a thorough cleaning. I keep reminding myself that nothing in life worth doing is easy. Drywall work started over the weekend and things should wrap up today or tomorrow. Then it’s onto cleaning and painting. I’m hoping to have the shell of the room finished by June 1st. I’ll be sharing progress in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

Even though it isn’t the studio of my dreams, I’m really excited to make it my own and to have a place outside of the house to be creative and make messes. It’s The Underdog in studio form!

Wonderful news. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your creativity.

You are going to make this space perfect…I just know it. Can’t wait to see!

06.May.2015

I’m a firm believer in “things happen for a reason”. This studio will be exactly what YOU need it to be WHEN you need it. Good luck!

06.May.2015

Actually………..I love it more than the first studio option. It’s cool to enter a building and use the loading elevator! Congratulations Dana. Have fun!

06.May.2015

FUN!!!!!
I’m sure the positive distraction and flow of creativity will help heal your rattled nerves – as well as Everett’s little (yet big) spirit..: )
Hugs, hugs, hugs,

You will have this looking perfect in no time at all! I cannot wait to see what you do with this space :)

06.May.2015

This is so great! I know it’s not the original space you had in mind, but I bet this works out for the best in the end! Better to have more room than not enough, right? I’m so glad for you that this dream of having a studio is coming to fruition. I like to think that everything happens for a reason, even if we don’t understand the reason at the time. I can’t wait to see what you do with this space!!

I love the windows!

06.May.2015

It looks like a great space! I wish that I lived closer to you so that I could help with the painting part – I can’t wait to see what it looks like finished. Have fun during this process!

06.May.2015

I think this is going to be a really great space for you! I can’t wait to see what you do with it

Those windows are too amazing to not make this space trump the first. I really like it. And I think you’ll come to appreciate the extra space. Can’t wait to see the makeover process!!!

06.May.2015

So much potential! I can’t wait to see what you do with it, but I know it will be amazing!

06.May.2015

not gonna lie here Dana. I really like this one more than the first. Its raw, and great, and just perfect. as you said its the underdog, and we all know how you rocked the socks off THE underdog!! this is gonna be good love. Congratulations.

06.May.2015

Awesome space! I must have missed a post? Are you going to make/sell art or a spot for design consults? Or just a space away from kids?- Ha I’d love that some days!!

I LOVE this space–it’s so raw and open. I’d be a little overwhelmed with all of the design possibilities–can’t wait to see how you transform it!

06.May.2015

I still don’t really understand why you wanted a studio…Can you please elaborate in upcoming posts. I’m interested as I thought downsizing was because you wanted to pay off your mortgage so I don’t really understand why you want to sign up to pay rent too?

No judgement at all obviously- just really curious and excited! xx

Ps, It’s soo nice to have you back, although I have very much been enjoying your archives while you’ve been gone!

06.May.2015

Now we will watch the space evolve!

06.May.2015

Hi Dana. I could so relate to your disappointment in not getting the space you wanted. But knowing what you have done in the past, I know you will make your newly acquired studio a perfect place. There may be challenges to overcome, but you are good at that. You will figure it out. Even the weird loading dock entryway – you will find a way to make it interesting and a good thing. Believe in your abilities. You will do it!

06.May.2015

It all really comes down to what I discussed in the first post (linked to within this post). We’re still on track to pay off our mortgage at the end of this year / beginning of next. I don’t really want to pay rent but I do crave a separate creative space outside of the house. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out…but I want to give it a try.

06.May.2015

I don’t have tunnel vision for the space at this point. I discussed in my previous post (linked to within this one) that I’m craving a creative space outside the house. Of course, I will create content for the blog…and that may include art ;) I plan on having the kids there with me most of the time but working alone sometimes sounds nice too ;)

06.May.2015

Can’t wait to see what you make of it! Although your original space didn’t work out, I’m glad something did in the end:)

06.May.2015

When you left the pharmacy and downsized to the Underdog, I thought your plan was to pursue interior design professionally. Now it sounds like you’re moving toward photography? I know Mabrey was a change in your plan, but is interior design shelved permanently? Very curious.

06.May.2015

The new space is fantastic!! I can’t wait to see what you make of it and all of the creativity it unleashes. Your search has inspired me to look for my own studio space as my garage is just not cutting it. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet found anything remotely resembling this space in Atlanta in my budget, but I’m still looking!

07.May.2015

I think it looks fantastic!!! I love the high ceilings, the walls will be great with new drywall and paint, but that brick wall and windows – to die for!!!! I think you are very lucky to have found this space and in a year (or less) after you have spun your magic, you will love it too and will be so happy with it. Just you wait and see….

the windows, the brick wall and the high ceilings, I can see a lovely studio. I can see lots of creative things hanging from that ceiling too! Can’t wait to see your progress.

07.May.2015

I’ve never commented before but I just had to reach out to say how much I admire your attitude. Way to stay positive. I know from my own experience that it isn’t easy to do but it’s the only way to stay sane under hard circumstances. Several things have conspired in my own life to keep you on my mind (a very sick ten-year-old son, a kid hit by a car in our neighborhood, and thinking about getting a studio of my own) so I’m glad to get your studio update. It’s really good to know that even when you had much bigger fish to fry you didn’t give up on your dream. Thanks.

07.May.2015

I totally get your need to have a creative outlet outside of your home. There is something about being at home that I just immediately fall into my routine which doesn’t generally include getting non-household work done. For me the separation is essential. I think the new space will be just what you need! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

07.May.2015

Good on you for trying- can’t wait to see progress!

07.May.2015

I have fantasies of having a yurt or something in the backyard to use as my own creative space. In my fantasies I’m the only one allowed in there. If I ever do get something like that, I doubt I’ll successfully keep the kids out, though. I think your space is/will be lovely. Good luck whipping it into shape.

08.May.2015

Congrats, Dana! This is a beautiful, light-filled space. I liked the first space too, but this is larger so will provide more room for the kids to play and explore. Can’t wait to see what you do with it. Happy (early) Mother’s Day!!!

I think it’s an absolute diamond in the rough and have no doubt it’s going to look amazing once you’ve put your touch on it!

We built a loft studio into our house during our renovation last year, and it currently sits unfinished, piled high with the boxes that we haven’t yet unpacked, BUT…. I have big dreams for it down the road. Will look forward to watching what you do with yours and how you use it, for inspiration!!

xo.

12.May.2015

Thanks for your lovely comment Laurabeth. It means a lot. I recently read somewhere that if you wait to try / launch / jump when you’re 100% ready, you waited too long. I’m using that as my motto as I move forward with this space!

12.May.2015

I am working on a bedroom project right now with a local client. I will be sharing more soon! At this time, I have to be selective about the design work I take on because I still want to be home with Mabrey and meet the boys when they get off the bus. I’ve realized that I enjoy being able to see and work on a room in person (as opposed to virtually). I think the client and I get more out of it that way. So, no, designing isn’t getting shelved!
