moroccan wedding blanket

The next two weeks are jam packed with deadlines over here. I’m not complaining. I feel like if I can make it through the next few weeks then it’s smooth sailing for the summer. (Fingers crossed.) I’m excited to share a client’s bedroom makeover, studio progress and plans, and a secret photo shoot that’s probably the biggest thing to happen to H*T yet.

Over the weekend I installed linens and artwork at my client’s home. I brought in a Moroccan wedding blanket for the bed. It was my first time seeing one in person. You guys, they are even more gorgeous in real life! The sequins jingle ever so lightly, almost like a dainty wind chime. It’s crazy how a blanket can entice the senses of sight, sound and touch all at once. I wanted to take it home with me ;)

More good stuff…

*Ideas for revamping vintage furniture.

*A bathroom before and after on instagram. I LOVE the cement tile and matte black fixtures.

*Apartment Therapy’s annual small cool contest is in full swing. I’m rooting for a chic converted garage and an efficient family home.

*This stopgap kitchen (part one, part two) and accompanying DIY breakfast nook are inspiring examples of big style on a small budget.

*Kanu is my favorite swimsuit brand for little girls. I bought this red and white polka dot tankini for Mabrey. The fit is perfect!

*I kinda want to try boiling or cooking eggs in the microwave. Have you ever cooked eggs in the microwave?

Happy Monday!

my hubs makes eggs every morning in the pampered chef dish – just make sure you whisk the eggs a bit first, I didn’t know this and had an egg explosion :)

Good to know!

I make scrambled eggs in the microwave all the time. It’s quick and easy! I put two eggs in a large coffee mug (use a spritz of Pam to make clean-up easier) and scramble with a fork. Cook on high for 30 seconds, take out and mix well again with fork. Cook for another 30 seconds or so, depending on how well done you like your eggs and how fast your microwave cooks. Watch the timing carefully the first time you do this. The eggs will expand and overflow the cup if cooked too long.

I make egg patties in the microwave. These are perfect for breakfast sandwiches. I use a small round bowl (microwave safe), spray the inside with coconut oil spray so the eggs won’t stick, pour in my desired amount of egg whites, sprinkle a little Mrs Dash on top and then microwave for 45 seconds. Then I take them out, stir for a few seconds and microwave for another 45 seconds. Done and done.

I put 1/3 -1/2 cup water in a small pyrex measuring cup, and crack an egg into it, and then microwave for 50-60 seconds (depending on the microwave). Lift it out with a slotted spoon and voila! an easy, perfect poached egg! I do this almost every morning, although ribbony, vinegary “real” poached eggs are a treat when I can get them.

Eggs are so good for you, I just feel like the microwave would kill some of that goodness?! ( ever since being told that I can’t reheat breastmilk in a microwave because it would kill the important stuff, I’ve been thinking a lot a out what else it kills in food! )

02.June.2015

I make myself an egg sandwich every morning. I crack an egg in a cereal bowl, add a splash of milk, a little salt and pepper, and whisk with a fork. I usually cook it for about 45 seconds then check to see how it’s doing. Sometimes I flip it in the bowl with a fork if the underside isn’t all the way cooked and microwave it for another 20 seconds.

I have been using that egg boiler contraption (1st one) for probably 10 years. I love it. Perfect when you only need a few hard boiled eggs at a time.

02.June.2015

My sister tried doing a “hard boiled egg” in the microwave. When she opened up the door, the egg exploded everywhere, leaving burn marks on her face and neck. So be careful if you try it!

02.June.2015

I have that egg dish! It makes great eggs. We don’t use ours anymore so I’d be happy to send it to you, it is actually in a box of things to get rid of right now.

02.June.2015

Should have specified which dish, oops! It is the Pampered Chef one. I’m in Cincinnati and would be happy to ship to you.

We do eggs in the micro all the time. My kiddos (ages 8-16) all make their own breakfast before school and English Muffin and egg sammies are made on the daily here. We use a glass bowl sprayed with canola oil, crack the egg right on in, beat it up, put just a pinch of water in it (makes the eggs much fluffier when micro cooking), they salt and pepper to taste and cook for 40 seconds. We sometimes throw in veggies (chopped green pepper, onions, mushrooms, etc) and/or cheese to make a quick omelet style egg. Just made an egg sandwich for one of my boys this morning before he was off to a school trip. We had 2 mins for him to eat breakfast and he walked out the door with a piping hot egg on whole wheat muffin with jalapenos, cheese, and onion…and a smile since he didn’t have to try to eat cereal in the car!
As for boiling in the microwave, that’s a no-no without a special dish. They explode. And smell very bad. And stick to everything in your kitchen…ceiling included. Which is bad enough, but I know a couple peeps who got decently bad burns from trying this.
Moral of the story: micro cooking scrambled eggs/omelets: GOOD. Boiling: BAD.

02.June.2015

My old roommate and I totally microwaved eggs when we were in college just because the idea of getting out a pan and turning the stove on seemed like so. much. work. We would just crack a couple eggs in a bowl, whisk ’em up with a fork, microwave 45 secs or so, stir and microwave again. Super quick scrambled eggs – no special egg dish required!

Scrambled microwave egg/delicious: melt 1-2 T margarine in cereal bowl with napkin covering for 30 seconds. Break egg into bowl (use napkin for shells), add a lil milk and whisk. Return to microwave for 1 minute. Stir with fork and eat!

02.June.2015

Funny story… I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to cook eggs in the microwave, so I did. I took one bite of the “microwave hard-boiled” egg and it exploded in my face. Burned my whole upper lip so I had to go to class looking like I had a botched Botox injection. It hurt so badly and also turned me off to boiled eggs for… 10 years now? Lesson learned.

02.June.2015

I normally just do mine in a mug (sometimes the rinsed-out one I just had my morning coffee in… Soooo lazy!!) with a splash of water in the bottom. I find pricking the yolk once or twice with a fork helps reduce the explosions, just be really careful scooping the egg out (maybe it’s the hot water getting trapped under the egg white?) as it can sometimes pop a bit.

02.June.2015

More importantly, are you able to share where the stunning Moroccan blanket came from?? Does anyone out there have a good source? Most of the places I’ve found either cost $450+ or are a bit sketchy to shop at ‘online’…

I poach my eggs in the mircowave from time to time using this method:

http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-poach-an-egg-in-the-microwave-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-125453

Dirtying a whole saucepan for just one or two eggs seems like a waste to me, so I like doing it this way. Took a few tries to figure out how to cook it perfectly in my microwave though. In the beginning, sometimes it was under done and I had to do another 10 seconds, then another, etc., or the yolk would be cooked solid because I ran it too long. Oops. Never had a problem with explosions though.

Seeing that I have chickens, I do consider myself the egg expert ;) I’ve cooked them every which way. The best scrambled egg will always be with a little butter, slowly cooked and turned on the stove top. I have the micro egg sandwich maker (Nordic on Amazon) and it serves its purpose for lunch on the go, say at work where all you have is a microwave. It’s just as much cleanup as a mini fry pan. However, the egg very easily becomes rubbery and tough – so this is never my prefered method. The egg hard-boiler you posted, however, does indeed make a perfect hard boiled egg that’s easy to peel – especially infamously hard to peel fresh from the coop eggs, they peel perfectly! ps. I continue to adore your blog, I find it daily.

03.June.2015

Thanks so much for your tips! I’m seriously considering that egg boiler. My boiled eggs are always so difficult to peel :(

03.June.2015

That looks surprisingly easy! Thanks for sharing.

03.June.2015

I found it on etsy. I had to search through what felt like hundreds to find one large enough for a king bed but with a doable price tag. This one was $290 + international shipping, so ~$350 total. It is in good – not perfect – condition and is BEAUTIFUL!

03.June.2015

That’s so nice of you! Mind if I shoot you an email?

03.June.2015

We have eggs nearly every morning for breakfast. I don’t mind making them stovetop. I was just wondering how they would do in the microwave on those few crazy mornings where we’re scrambling (no pun intended) around and there’s no time for stovetop eggs but we want something better than cereal. I would be interested in knowing what, if anything, the microwave destroys regarding eggs, too!

04.June.2015

Where is that gorgeous blanket from? Just stayed in a home in Palm Springs that had one in the Master and you are right, even better in person.

04.June.2015

Not at all! Does it come up when I comment or do you need me to send you my email address?

05.June.2015

I will email you ;)

Oh man a Mococcan wedding blanket is so high up on my must have list right now. Its right up there with a suzani, boucherouite rug, shibori fabric and a moroccan pouf. Erins work is amazing. Love everything she does. Also love the T&C kitxhen. So so good.

25.June.2015

Gosh you!!! A reader of yours just emailed me asking about my kitchen. I was totally unaware you had featured me. This made my day, you, my friend have always been a favorite, I feel honored to be recognized. Luvs! Lindy

Do you happen to know the color of the cabinets?

18.May.2016

I believe they are Farrow & Ball down pipe. Great color!
