...because home doesn't happen overnight.
04.18.10 / Put a Ring In It

I wear my wedding rings pretty much all the time:  while painting, working out, even sleeping.  But there’s something about getting them wet that drives me crazy.  I think it’s because I can’t dry off my ring finger well enough with them on that I end up with an itchy rash right where they sit on my finger.  For that reason, I usually remove them when I’m washing dishes, hand washing, bathing my boys, putting on lotion/sunscreen or washing my face.  For the longest time, I had trouble remembering where I last took them off at…thus leading to paranoia that I had officially lost them.  Luckily, they always turned up after a few days.  Still, I vowed (wedding pun totally intended) not to let it happen again.  Enter “Operation Put a Ring In It”.

I quickly realized that there were 5 zones where I repeatedly “lost” my rings:  windowsill above the kitchen sink, powder room, boys’ bathroom, my bathroom vanity and bedside on my nightstand.  To make finding them a little easier, I placed a ring holder in each area.  See for yourself…

Kitchen Windowsill

(yup, that’s Handy Hubby’s wedding band too!)

Powder Room

Boys’ Bathroom

My Vanity

Bedside Nightstand

Now when I look down at my left hand and find it naked, my heart doesn’t skip a beat and my chest doesn’t tighten.  I just search each of these dropzones and I’m sure to find my wedding rings every time.  (Handy Hubby has taken to using the ring dropzones too after “losing” his wedding band for nearly 2 months!)  Finding ring holders was cheap.  4 of the 5 ring holders hail from Goodwill.  (Handy Hubby gifted me the porcelain egg crate on the nightstand that I mentioned here.)  And just to be on the safe side, my wedding bands are fully insured…even if I lose ’em.

What about you?  How do you keep track of your ring’s whereabouts?  Any lost-and-found wedding ring stories out there?  Do you never take yours off?  Or maybe you just don’t feel comfortable with a ring on your finger, period.  Or maybe (like me) you’re a total geek and loved the episode of GLEE where the football team does a rendition of Beyonce’s “Put a Ring On It.”  C’mon, I can’t be the only one.

I essentially never take mine off … but I lost it anyway, once. I have no idea how it happened, or where it went. I identified the location to within a few hundred linear feet and three rooms (including a public restroom, unfortunately), and searched them all thoroughly — a good friend even helped me with the disgusting task of pawing through paper towels in the trash. We never found it, and I had to get a replacement. My wife, on the other hand, takes her wedding and engagement bands off all the time, but does much as you now do and leaves them in a few well known locations — and has thus never misplaced them.

I have two drop zones in my house. One is in the kitchen, the other is in my bedroom. It is the only way I know where to find my wedding ring.
Although for the last two months my ring has been in the kitchen drop zone as I have spent every waking moment in the basement trying to defeat the invading water!!!!

Ethan – If it makes you feel any better, Handy Hubby lost his wedding band the day we got back from our honeymoon. We searched high and low retracing every one of his steps. We eventually did find it…in our attic! He had taken a few wedding gifts up there that we wouldn’t be using on a daily basis. It was cold and it must have just slipped off. Nothing like starting your marriage off by losing your wedding ring!

Sarah – Goodwill had all kinds of great little dishes and bowls (for cheap!) that make pretty ring holders. Happy hunting!

Julie – Oh, I hate to hear about leaky basements! Our previous home had major water issues in the basement. After a big snow once, we found ourselves outside shoveling the snow away from our foundation hoping it would keep the basement dry. It didn’t work. We ended up having to invest in an expensive dewatering system (we already had a sump pump and that wasn’t working on its own). It did work but the installation was a complete mess. We were so happy and relieved when it was over. That’s why we are so reluctant to finish the basement in our current home…waiting and waiting to make sure it isn’t going to leak first! Good luck; I feel your pain!

This is such a good post! It’s so true that we all have our little spots. There are pretty much only two times when my rings come off–when I’m dealing with sticky dough in the kitchen and when I’m putting lotion on in the mornings. The rings to on the kitchen windowsill or on my vanity. I might follow your lead and get ta cute container for the window sill. I have the same antrho egg crate on my vanity, which works wonders!

I never take my rings off. I’m too clumsy and lose things too often. At least this way I know where it is. I do take it off for when I have to deep conditioner and detangle my hair since the ring snags my curly hair-but it’s back on as soon as I’m done and I feel naked without it.

I never take mine off, to a fault. I have tried without much success to get paint and primer out of all the nooks and crannies. Doh! I should take off my rings like you do. Great ideas for catching those babies!

I take off my rings all the time and keep them safe on the strap of my watch, be it on my wrist or on the counter/vanity/bedside table. On the go, this “ringwatch” can get attached to the belthoops of my trousers or tossed into my bag.

Miriam – What a great idea! Thanks for sharing.

Awesome! Now when I break into your house, I’ll know where to look first! No, truly, I like this. I wish I could train my hubby to use our designated “drop zones”. Instead, I’ll be crafting him a velcro utility belt for cell phone, wallet, keys, ipod, itouch, glasses, etc.

Amy – I have no doubts that you could train him…I’ve seen your work. Hehe.

This is exactly why I never take mine off. It makes me too nervous! My husband takes his off the second he gets home and I’m constantly worried that he will lose it or the cat will play with it (and he has many times!) At least if you have only a few place you take them off and you only place them in those 5 areas, you can’t lose them…hopefully!

This is such a simple but fabulous idea! I’m like you and keep my ring on for almost everything but that water really gets me. Thanks for not only sharing the idea, but the pictures, too.

Christy – I was hoping to help somebody out there who was frequently misplacing their ring(s) also. I prefer blog posts with pictures to tell the story, so maybe taking pictures of my rings in each place was a little tedious and unnecessary but fun nonetheless. Glad you like it!
