...because home doesn't happen overnight.

*THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.*

Congrats to Isaac who – thanks to his mom – can’t leave for work in the morning without first making his bed. {There’s hope for my boys yet!!} Let’s hear it for a male H*T reader. HH says hi, Isaac.

Mother’s Day is less than a week away. Yikes! Thankfully, The Home Depot offers gift cards that make gift-giving fast and easy, and are the perfect last-minute gift…so Mom doesn’t have to know that you waited until the last minute.

Mom can use her gift card to suit her fancy – whether it’s creating a dream garden, outdoor living space or flower bed. Or maybe Mom has plans to update a room indoors. Whatever the case may be for the woman who nurtured you, The Home Depot has her covered.

Make gift-giving personal with gift cards available in many different designs or customize one to your liking with a photo and message. The Home Depot eGift Cards are an eco-friendly choice and can even be personalized with a video…a no-brainer gift for Moms who live out of town!

This week The Home Depot is giving H*T readers the chance to score a free gift card! See entry details below.

PRIZE: one $100 gift card to The Home Depot

RULES: You must be at least 18 years old to enter and have a U.S. shipping address. No P.O. boxes please. One entry per email address.

HOW TO ENTER: Leave a comment on this post proclaiming “MORE DOING!”

DEADLINE: Enter before Thursday, May 10th at 9:00 p.m. EST. One winner will be chosen via random.org and announced on Friday, May 11th.

WHILE YOU’RE AT IT: In honor of Mother’s Day, share a physical trait, hobby, talent…heck, even a recipe!…your Mom passed down to you that you’re thankful for. I’ll go first. I’m thankful my mom encouraged creativity in my siblings and me as children. Growing up, we had a kiln in our house. My mom would help us paint and fire ceramics. She also made many of our clothes and costumes. She taught me to sew. She tried to teach me crochet but I never caught on as I was left-handed and she was teaching me right-handed. She opened my eyes to the world of all things handmade. {I blame her for my love of etsy!} My mom suffers from schizophrenia now and it affects her ability to make good decisions and decipher ‘real’ from ‘unreal.’ We don’t have the best relationship, so whenever I think back to my childhood, I’m thankful for the creative time with her.

The Home Depot partnered with bloggers such as me to help promote their gift cards. As part of this promotion, I received a gift card to share with my readers. They did not tell me what to say about the product. The Home Depot believes that consumers and bloggers are free to form their own opinions and share them in their own words. The Home Depot’s policies align with WOMMA Ethics Code, FTC guidelines and social media engagement recommendations. The winner of this giveaway will be randomly chosen and gift card fulfillment will be handled by a third party.

My Mom passed down to me, hey my Dad also, the do-it-yourself attitude. We love doing everything inside and outside of our home ourselves. I think I’ve passed this trait onto my children as well.

07.May.2012

MORE DOING!
I am grateful to my mother for the countless nights she spent sewing costumes, outfits and dance dresses. She was a amazing. I can sew, but I can’t hold a candle to her phenomenal skills. I am grateful that as her life was ending I found solace in painting, which has lead to so many interesting projects and people through the work I’ve done. I wish she was here to see it all, she has inspired me to do all of it.

07.May.2012

MORE DOING!

My mom was a beautiful person. Among the many things she passed on to me are my green eyes and the desire to always see the best in people. Sometimes that last trait got me in trouble but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love you, Mom!

I pray your relationship with your mom is reconciled and she is restored to having complete clarity of mind. … one thing I love about my mom is her boldness and courage. I hope I have some of that in me :) MORE DOING!!

07.May.2012

More doing!

My mom instilled so many traits in all of us that it’s really hard to choose one! She was so strict with us as we were growing up, but it’s allowed us all to (eventually) become good, moral people with enough strength to make up our own minds but to always consider others. Also, as I’m pregnant and currently reading labor and delivery horror stories, I’m glad she passed down her hips which are currently providing ample room for what is likely to be her very large first grandchild…

I’m thankful that my mom instilled a love of plants and gardening in me! I certainly don’t have a green thumb, nor do I have a gorgeous garden, but I find weeding and creating beauty outside oddly relaxing and rewarding. I’m finding that my son (4yo) loves it too, and that thrills me!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!

07.May.2012

MORE DOING!

The older I get, the more I realize how much I am like my mom! She passed along lots of things to me – her curly hair, her sensitivity, her love for food, and her strong work ethic. She has tried to teach me to cook, but I think it might take another 30 years for me to get to her level, so in the meantime, I just come over for dinner any time she invites me!

07.May.2012

More Doing!

No mom comment :-(

07.May.2012

More Doing!

Growing up, my mom used to sew our Halloween costumes which is funny because she hated to sew. But I’m so thankful she taught me how to use a sewing machine because I love being able to upholster chairs or sew my own curtains!

MORE DOING!

07.May.2012

MORE DOING! My mom taught me basically everything I know. I am the person I am because of her.

07.May.2012

I’m thankful for my Mom in general. My parents divorced when I was 2 and I’m thankful that my Mom not only had the courage to leave him and face the world alone with two babies in toe, but also that she had the determination to turn her life around. 07.May.2012

07.May.2012

MORE DOING!

I have the exact hands and feet as my mom. Sometimes I look at her hands and think SHE has my hands…no wait, I have HER hands. haha! She and my Dad have flipped several homes over the years while holding down full-time jobs. This showed me and siblings that hard work pays off. My mom did everything from drywall, installing electical outlets to laying tile, etc. This taught me and my sister that it’s okay for women to get dirty and that we don’t have to wait for a boy to do these things. While we were growing up she (and my Dad) gave us a lot of experiences to learn as much as we could. We went to museums, we were in activities, we went camping, we went to shows, we went bike riding, we attended nature workshops…she is the best mom. :-)

07.May.2012

Mom passed down.. hospitality, a love of travel, and the ability to not take myself too seriously…

07.May.2012

MORE DOING. I’m thankful to both my parents for staying open to different cultures (I have a korean background and a caucasian husband) and I’m so happy I picked up the same habits she has, despite always saying, “I hope I never turn into my mother.” I’m so lucky I turned out just like her!

07.May.2012

MORE DOING! My mom is the hardest worked I know having raised 5 kids and working full-time while doing it. 07.May.2012

07.May.2012

More Doing! I’m so glad my mom taught me to be a strong and independent woman. I can now instill that trait in my daughter.

07.May.2012

MORE DOING! My mom always encouraged us to be creative and cultured. My siblings and I always embraced creative arts and travel growing up and now that we’re all adults (with completely different personalities!) From a working middle-class family, my mom always gave money for us to be able to play musical instruments and I hope to be able to do the same.

MORE DOING! My mom passed down her love of fruits and veggies to me.

07.May.2012

MORE DOING! This might be cheesy, but my mom taught me I could do anything that I wanted if I set my mind to it. She’s always on the sidelines cheering me on, even if she doesn’t think what I am doing will work. And if it doesn’t work, she never says “I told you so”, but helps me fix it instead.

07.May.2012

More doing! Thankful that Mom was such a great example of doing the little things – like peeling and sectioning out a grapefruit for us, even though it was annoying and time consuming!

She is almost 71, works full time and still has plenty of time for her 28 grandchildren! I can only hope that someday I can be half as amazing as my mother.

Cheers to the zany moms out there!

We regularly get together to share what is new with our gardens, split plants, swap seeds, and work together side by side.

We were always working on some kind of art project or home project that required us to think outside of the box… something I still love to this day. Another thing my mom passed on to me was a love of plants and gardens. I’m currently living in a rented home, so we can’t plant a garden just yet, but I honestly cannot wait until this fall, when we move into a home we own (!!!) to start planting and to get her to come help me with that since she’s the person who knows it all when it comes to plants!

She raised 5 kids on her own and although I am happily married with 3 kids I think of all the things she went though as a single mom and it makes me a better mom. Also, cleanliness and decorating. I always have to have a company ready house lol. And although our tastes are a little different we both are always working in our homes, something I grew up watching/helping her do.

I’m sorry your mom is not the same anymore. I’m glad you have those happy childhood memories to hold on to.

Twenty eight years later, she is still there proving them all them all wrong.

More doing! My mom taught me how to be a mom, even though I didn’t realize it while I was living at home.

07.May.2012

More Doing! I am thankful for my mother – possibly the most resouceful woman I know. Which I think is it’s own form of creativity. My parents both come from large families and my mother always made spending time with their many siblings, neices, newphews and parents a priority despite her busy life as a wife/mother and nurse practitioner.

07.May.2012

MORE DOING! My mom showed me what it means to be a strong and smart woman. She’s a force of nature.

07.May.2012

MORE DOING. I’m thankful that my mom passed on her work ethic as she worked two jobs most of my life to keep her four children happy and healthly. I’m blessed that now she lives with my husband and I helping us raise our our two children as we both work crazy busy jobs. My children benefit from having her there cheering them on and loving them daily. I’m blessed that I can give back to her for all the hard work she put in to raise me (and the gray hairs I’m sure I caused :-))!!

One of the most important things my mom has taught me (and my brother) is working hard and taking pride in your work. Oh, and she taught me how to clean like a rock star!

07.May.2012

More Doing! Mom taught me to laugh and roll with the punches. While this isn’t a physical talent, it keeps one active and alive!

07.May.2012

More doing!

My mom passed on her DIY spirit to me. I remember one time my dad was out of town for a couple days on business and my mom took it upon herself to stay up to the wee hours of the morning installing new wood laminate floors. I asked her why she didn’t wait for my dad to help her and she said “I just wanted him out of the way so I could do it myself and have it done right.”

07.May.2012

More Doing!

My mom taught me how to bake, and there is hardly a day without some kind of goody baking in the oven … :)

07.May.2012

What did I NOT get from my mom? I got her olive skin tone, her light eyes, her love of smiling and laughing, her creativity, her not-so-green-thumb (we pretty much kill everything) and her compulsion to write lists. :)

07.May.2012

More doing!

My Mom taught me to not waste time feeling sorry for myself and to deal with what life has handed me….easier said than done of course, but she always points out the wonderful, and doesn’t waste time on the disappointments.

07.May.2012

More doing! What wonderful memories you have – thanks for sharing.

My mom passed down her creativity. She was always doing things growing up, and loved doing them for money! I love selling things and making things!!

07.May.2012

More doing!

My mom was a spontaneous home improver. She would wake up in the morning and decide she no longer liked the wallpaper in the dining room. Instead of just dealing with it some other time, she would run right out to the store, find what she liked and fix it right then and there. I am more of a planner but her adventurous spirit pops up in me every once in a while!

07.May.2012

More doing!

Growing up we were a paycheck to paycheck family and never really had “extra”. My mom always said “if it’s a problem with money, it’s not a problem”. That quote has gotten me through many a financial issue and has taught me to enjoy living with less.

Combine wet and dry ingredients. Heat griddle and use a ladle to make pancakes. Flip when bubbles appear. Serve with Vermont maple syrup.

07.May.2012

Moms are complicated, aren’t they? Mom passed down her love for popcorn, a perfectly fried egg, and acquiring ‘stuff’ for projects. Unfortunately, that also came with the trait of putting off projects until everything’s JUST perfect.

07.May.2012

More doing!

My mom passed on her looks (or so everyone says!) to me. I hope I have her same beautiful smooth skin when I’m her age. Sometimes people ask if we’re sisters!!

More Doing!. My mom passed away when I was ten, but what I do remember her doing, besides crosswords, is making the home feel so great during the holidays. She would start baking weeks before Christmas and the house smelled wonderful coming home to, and at Easter we had the whole congregation over and it was a great feast. She liked crafting too, so I am sure I got my love for it from watching her.

My mom passed on her baking skills. She’s trying to pass on her outdoor skills now that I have a house and I’m just not grasping them!

More doing! My Mom and I are physically different in almost every way. She’s tall, tan, and thin with poker straight blonde hair and gorgeous brown eyes and I’m medium height, pasty, and plump with wild and curly brown hair and blue eyes. We’ve often joked that I must have been dropped off at the doorstep by gypsies as a child. When I meet people in her life or she meets people in mine for the first time people find it hard to believe we’re mother and daughter – until we open our mouths and start to speak. We have the same mannerisms, the same way of speaking, the same colloquialisms, and the same tendency to get really animated and excited while talking about things we love or retelling stories.

My mom and my Boosh (grandmother… now 91 and still on fire) are both amazing seamstresses. Even though they never taught me how to sew, I now have a sewing business. I’m not sure I learned how to sew through osmosis or just by being at the right spot at the right time. They both now no longer sew and I do the sewing for them. The are my best & worst critics, but it presses me on to be better!

I am thankful of my mom’s ability to pass onto me her love and support for people of all races, sexuality, backgrounds, etc. My dad was let’s face it a racist, a hater of those not like him and never held his views to himself. I am truly thankful of the balance my mom provided for this and even more thankful I have followed in her footsteps. Thank you for showing me to love the world and all its people, mom!

08.May.2012

More doing! My mom passed on my appreciation of nature.

08.May.2012

My mom also taught me to sew! I had so many hand made things as a kid, and when I moved out and lived in an apartment, we did some sewing projects together. And now I have super-meaningful pillow covers because I made them with her.

08.May.2012

More doing! My mom passed me her beauty. In our pictures as young girls, we look identical. Some of them, I can’t tell if it is me or her. We regularly get mistaken for sisters or twins even. (If she wasn’t so beautiful, I may be a little more offended.) The strange thing is, we don’t see that we look alike AT ALL. It’s weird.

08.May.2012

More Doing! My Mom was always involved in theater. She was either in a play, directing a play or producing something. I loved going to see her and now I take my daughters to watch her. I have a deep appreciation for her talent and hard work for something she loves to do.

08.May.2012

MORE DOING! My hubby’s take on the older Home Depot slogan, “You can do it. We can help.”; “You can do it. We’ll sell you the stuff!”. Used to crack me up all the time!

My Mom passed down to me her love of sewing! She used to sew clothes for herself and me too. I learned a lot and I sew as much as I can now.

Thanks for hosting the awesome giveaway!

08.May.2012

More doing! My mom passed on a number of things onto me that I absolutely love. More importantly, I love the fact that she picked these very same things from my grandmother. My mother has always done some sort of sewing or crafting and although I could never pick up knitting, I do love to make things for my house. I love that my mother always had a book around and I can thank her for my love of reading. I love that she’s moved into the modern age and has an Ipad, while I still love the feel of a real book. :)

08.May.2012

MORE DOING! My mom taught me to finish what you start…it may take longer than you anticipate but don’t quit and fight to live, even if the odds seem stacked against you.

This coming from a woman who was married young, had 5 kids, found out she had cancer and then left to be a single mother by her first husband. She beat cancer & met my dad as her first set of kids were nearing/in their teen years.

For some crazy reason after they married they wanted to have child together even though they had 6 between them already. I was born right before their 1st anniversary and right after she was diagnosed while pregnant with colon cancer a 2nd time. She missed almost all of my 1st year milestones due to being in the hospital of chemo or radiation but she made it to my 1st birthday, which they said she wouldn’t see because she would be dead. After that she also was able to homeschool me in elementary school, go back to college & get her degree in nursing, watch me graduate, get married, and see the birth of my son.

In her 70’s she’s still going strong after raising 7 children, chasing around 31 grandchildren, and throughly spoiling 11 great-grandchildren.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway…Home Depot is one of her favorite places ;)

08.May.2012

I think I inherited my mom’s “can-do” attitude. We both cannot wait for someone else to do something for us – we jump into a project and figure it out ourselves (this could also be translated as stubborn genes!!)

More doing!

My mom took piano lessons growing up, and she got me started on piano at a very young age– think toddler– and encouraged me to take up flute when I got to band in middle school. I’m now in arts administration, using that music knowledge for a paycheck!

08.May.2012

My mom has always been spontaneous when it comes to house projects. More often than not, she thinks of painting a room and then has it done and redecorated (very nicely, might I add) by the end of the weekend. I now love doing the same! Like her, when I feel creative, I take advantage of it and I really enjoy doing it spontaneously.

08.May.2012

And to my “Bonus” mom who stepped in when I was two and has raised me the last 32 years and taught me to be a strong woman, for myself and family. My mom is a gifted seamstress and made almost all of my clothes growing up in an effort to save money. Eventually, she left her job as a high school home economics teacher to stay home with me and my brothers. Instead of just being a regular stay at home mom, she decided to open her own drapery and upholstery business out of our house. She taught me so much about creativity, fashion, and DIY…but also set a wonderful example of how to be an amazing, devoted mother and still follow your life’s passion.

Perhaps that’s an answer in itself–I am truly thankful my mother taught me to be myself and supports all my many pursuits, even though they’re very different from her own.

08.May.2012

More doing
We had a clean house but not always a tidy house. My mother worked hard hours outside the house and while we were home, we enjoyed our home – we didn’t fret that everything was always in it’s place… because it really wasn’t that important to any of us.

Miss you, Mom

09.May.2012

MORE DOING. My mom taught me how to sew, craft, and cook, but also how to wire in new ceiling lights, drive a stick shift, use a drill, a saw, etc. I’ll never forget ripping out the walls to our sunroom with my mom when I was 15, swinging a sledge hammer while the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack was playing. A girl’s gotta know how to do this stuff!

MORE DOING. I learned how to cook and sew by watching mom do these when we were kids. there was never a conscious effort to teach or learn from either side. You don’t even realize how much you pick up by just watching. There are so many things that I do a certain way just beacuse she did too the same way (and the reason she does it is coz grandma did it that way). I think I also got the tireless energy from her, she is always doing something. Really thankful for everything you have given me.

My mom is a huge believer in “Don’t ever pay full price for something if you don’t have to”. So we were the family who went to discount stores, used coupons, shopped at thrift store and garage sales before it was the “cool” thing to do! I take pride in myself now when people compliment on an outfit or decor item that I only paid a buck for! Thanks mom for your inherited cheapness!

09.May.2012

09.May.2012

As much as I resented the idea in junior high, I inherited a lot from my mom – almost all of it wonderful! Didn’t like it then, but love the financial responsibility I learned from my mom.

10.May.2012

More Doing! It’s funny how as I get older, I notice more and more things that are just like my mom – a few of the best are her work ethic, compassion and caring for others, creativity, and drive to succeed. One of the not so good ones is procrastination, but some say it sparks last minute creativity, so it’s not too bad! :)
