I’m thankful my mom instilled cleanliness in me. I can’t stand clutter now, and I think that is a good thing!

More doing! I love the fact that my mom handed down her knack for cooking. I spent tons of time with her in the kitchen and whenever I get in a rut of recipes I give her a call and she whips my creativity back on track.

More doing! I inherited most of my physical traits from my mom – people often mistake us for sisters!

MORE DOING! My Mom is the strongest woman I know and doesn’t ever back down! I try to strive for that (some days, a success. Some days not so much).

MORE DOING! My mom passed down her love of the outdoors, her sweet tooth, and her curly hair! I’m thankful for all of it (even the curls).

MORE DOING! I’m thankful my mom passed down her love of horses. It’s something we are able to do together, brings us closer, and gives us a bond and understanding that I wish more mothers and daughters could share!

MORE DOING! My mom passed on her weird sense of humor. From early childhood she read us Patrick McManus and Dave Barry stories. My brothers and I have the same warped sense of humor and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

my mom is an avid reader and showed me that books are important and valuable and stories should be shared with others. though all of my children are independent readers, i still love to read novels aloud to them at night before bed.

More Doing! When I was growing up I hated, hated cleaning. My mom used to tell me she could never find the floor in my room :). Now I’m the same way she was, always busy around the house cleaning something. I know she’s relieved that I’ve changed my ways over the years!

I am grateful to my mother for the countless nights she spent sewing costumes, outfits and dance dresses. She was a amazing. I can sew, but I can’t hold a candle to her phenomenal skills. I am grateful that as her life was ending I found solace in painting, which has lead to so many interesting projects and people through the work I’ve done. I wish she was here to see it all, she has inspired me to do all of it.

My mom was a beautiful person. Among the many things she passed on to me are my green eyes and the desire to always see the best in people. Sometimes that last trait got me in trouble but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I love you, Mom!

My mom instilled so many traits in all of us that it’s really hard to choose one! She was so strict with us as we were growing up, but it’s allowed us all to (eventually) become good, moral people with enough strength to make up our own minds but to always consider others. Also, as I’m pregnant and currently reading labor and delivery horror stories, I’m glad she passed down her hips which are currently providing ample room for what is likely to be her very large first grandchild…

More doing! My mom has been a fabulous example of how to take care of the home and raise great kids (she has 7!) with grace and excellence.

“MORE DOING!” My Mom passed down her awesome organizational skills! We are both obsessed with having things in their right place and it has made for a very nice living space now.

I’m thankful that my mom instilled a love of plants and gardening in me! I certainly don’t have a green thumb, nor do I have a gorgeous garden, but I find weeding and creating beauty outside oddly relaxing and rewarding. I’m finding that my son (4yo) loves it too, and that thrills me!

Growing up, my mom used to sew our Halloween costumes which is funny because she hated to sew. But I’m so thankful she taught me how to use a sewing machine because I love being able to upholster chairs or sew my own curtains!

MORE DOING! My mom passed down the “can’t make a decision trait.” It takes me large amounts of time to think through big decisions. But the great thing is that I usually like the decision I ended up with!

More doing!! My mom completely believes that she can do anything (and I’m positive that she can) – but I’m also lucky enough that she instilled that belief in me. It’s led to a lot of updates in my current home (we just redid our kitchen last year – with help from family and friends).

I’m thankful for my Mom in general. My parents divorced when I was 2 and I’m thankful that my Mom not only had the courage to leave him and face the world alone with two babies in toe, but also that she had the determination to turn her life around. Her accomplishments are amazing, and she’s a great Mother and role model.

More doing! My mom taught me how to love and care for people, especially those who have a mental handicap. I remember when I was younger I really struggled with her ideals and how it really applied. As I’ve gotten older, I really appreciate it. And realize that it has definitely impacted my life in a wonderful way.

I have the exact hands and feet as my mom. Sometimes I look at her hands and think SHE has my hands…no wait, I have HER hands. haha! She and my Dad have flipped several homes over the years while holding down full-time jobs. This showed me and siblings that hard work pays off. My mom did everything from drywall, installing electical outlets to laying tile, etc. This taught me and my sister that it’s okay for women to get dirty and that we don’t have to wait for a boy to do these things. While we were growing up she (and my Dad) gave us a lot of experiences to learn as much as we could. We went to museums, we were in activities, we went camping, we went to shows, we went bike riding, we attended nature workshops…she is the best mom. :-)

My mother taught me to keep putting one foot in front of the other. She was a single mom of 5 kids, putting them all first and through college. I think I have her strength, based on the trying times I have been going through. I cannot thank her enough for being such a strong role model.

I just spent a great weekend at my parents, with my husband, his brother, and brother’s family. My parents are such great hosts–I hope to inherit their hospitality!

Our house was also clean, our clothes always washed and a home cooked meal was on the table every night. Now that I’m a full-time working mother, I totally can relate how difficult it can be but I have a great role model!

My siblings and I always embraced creative arts and travel growing up and now that we’re all adults (with completely different personalities!) More doing! Thankful that Mom was such a great example of doing the little things – like peeling and sectioning out a grapefruit for us, even though it was annoying and time consuming!

My mom is my rock. She is who I call when I need a shoulder to cry on, advice on a life changing decision or just to remind me how long to boil an egg. She is constant, consistent and always patient. She has taught me about the mother I hope to be for my children.

She is almost 71, works full time and still has plenty of time for her 28 grandchildren! I can only hope that someday I can be half as amazing as my mother.

I am the youngest of three and I am 23 years old. And I think my mom is a strong woman. She is still going to school and will be graduating from the University of Washington with her Administration Certificate this summer to become a school principal. My mom is a great seamstress and has made beautiful wedding dresses. I can’t make wedding dresses, but can sew pretty well.

MORE DOING! I am so thankful my mom shared her love of plants and flowers with me while I was young. Of course, I didn’t like gardening while I was young, but now that I have my own place I love the act of gardening as a measure of meditation and beautifying my environment and it is something we both have in common now as adults. We regularly get together to share what is new with our gardens, split plants, swap seeds, and work together side by side.

Like your mom, my mom really encouraged and cultivated our creativity when my sister and I were kids. We were always working on some kind of art project or home project that required us to think outside of the box… something I still love to this day. Another thing my mom passed on to me was a love of plants and gardens. I’m currently living in a rented home, so we can’t plant a garden just yet, but I honestly cannot wait until this fall, when we move into a home we own (!!!) to start planting and to get her to come help me with that since she’s the person who knows it all when it comes to plants!

MORE DOING! My Mom taught me that I can do ANYTHING in this life. She was the first female mechanic hired for a well known cookie company in the early 1980’s. She had to prove that a woman could do a “man’s job”. Many male co-workers gave her a hard time and thought/hoped she would fail. i’m thankful my mom continually teaches me by always keeping her face to the sun, no matter what difficulty she is going through. and she has definitely gone through some. no matter what is going on in her life, she is trying to make sure she still gets 110% out of each day. she’s the most adventurous person i know and i’m working all the time to be more like her.

I went through chemo and got engaged without her even knowing. When she found out it scared her so now we get along fairly well and can bond over sewing.even though she didn’t teach me :)

I’m the youngest of seven kids and we all still see eachother every weekend as we gather around food and drink at my parents house. Mom is 93 and her last e-mail told me about trying out a new jelly recipe. I love her and am grateful that she is still in my life.

i inherited my mothers artistic creative side. i love making things, cooking sewing and all the crafty things that come my way. i’ll admit painting and drawing are my strongest suite but it’s nice to take a break from the canvas and paint a dresser or sew a quilt too so i love it all! and i love my mother. she has Bipolar Disorder so arts and crafts are also a retreat for her and do more for her than therapy.

My mom always remembered a handful of recipes by heart, and I’ve slowly been able to get to the same point over the last few years with my favorites that she’s passed down. They never turn out exactly the same (we don’t always measure when cooking in this family!) but I always know I have some good meals to lean on: chicken noodle soup, potato salad, stir fry, spinach and avocado dip, veggie pizza. YUM!

I will share a recipe for my mom’s yummy buttermilk pancakes. I am happy to say that my 12 year old son made this last weekend for he and a friend.

Nanny’s Buttermilk Pancakes

Combine:
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Whisk together:
2 cups buttermilk
1/3 cup milk
2 eggs
1/4 cups melted butter

Combine wet and dry ingredients. Heat griddle and use a ladle to make pancakes. Flip when bubbles appear. Serve with Vermont maple syrup.

I am thankful my mother instilled in me the importance of education and devotion to one’s children. In raising my own kiddos, I have been provided a wonderful example of what to do (and, of couse, not do in some instances). I am am very lucky to have the mom I have.

My mom lived by the caveat of DIY way back in the 60’s. She was the one who did repairs and improvements..my dad was a computer nerd and completely lost at using tools. I love that aspect of home ownership…thanks MOM!!!

More Doing!. My mom passed away when I was ten, but what I do remember her doing, besides crosswords, is making the home feel so great during the holidays. She would start baking weeks before Christmas and the house smelled wonderful coming home to, and at Easter we had the whole congregation over and it was a great feast. She liked crafting too, so I am sure I got my love for it from watching her.

More doing! My mom, a nurse, taught me how to do “hospital corners” on a head when I was 8, and ever since I’ve done it every time I’ve made a fresh bed.

My mom passed down her love of music to me. She is a wonderful elementary music teacher and choir director at my church. She taught me how to pay the piano. I didn’t always enjoy it as a child, but looking back I am so glad she made me stick with it!

She’s tall, tan, and thin with poker straight blonde hair and gorgeous brown eyes and I’m medium height, pasty, and plump with wild and curly brown hair and blue eyes. We’ve often joked that I must have been dropped off at the doorstep by gypsies as a child. When I meet people in her life or she meets people in mine for the first time people find it hard to believe we’re mother and daughter – until we open our mouths and start to speak. We have the same mannerisms, the same way of speaking, the same colloquialisms, and the same tendency to get really animated and excited while talking about things we love or retelling stories.

There are many things about my mom that I am thankful for, but one little thing that I always start to miss when I visit her home is how she always gets up early to make a cup of something warm in the morning for whoever is at the house- whether it be tea, coffee, or hot cider! It was nice to be woken by her silly good morning song, a smile, and that cup of tea!

MORE DOING! My mom passed on her hardworking attitude — work hard now, reap benefits later. This perspective has gotten me through many hardships where I wanted to give up. I’m so very thankful for her and all she has done for me and my siblings.

My mom and my Boosh (grandmother… now 91 and still on fire) are both amazing seamstresses. Even though they never taught me how to sew, I now have a sewing business. I think they always demonstrated how to put patterns & fabrics toghether and how to figure things out on the fly. I’m not sure I learned how to sew through osmosis or just by being at the right spot at the right time. They both now no longer sew and I do the sewing for them. The are my best & worst critics, but it presses me on to be better!

On the trying to teach me how to crochet, I had just the opposite problem. My mom is left-handed, and I’m not – so we had a similar (but different) problem.

More doing! I look just like my mom! In fact, one of the cafeteria workers at my elmentary school had been her childhood babysitter. As I went through the lunch line, she pointed me out and said that I must be my mother’s daughter. I always felt a special bond because we were so alike.

I inherited my mom’s ‘think outside of the box even if it’s extremely unusual’ creative thinking. My childhood included being dragged through many a partially constructed homes so my visual thinking and ability to ‘see’ a home’s rooms without walls, existing only of joists and trusses, is all due to her influence.

I can thank my mom and grandmother for my love of cooking. As far back as I can remember, my brother and I were encouraged to help in the kitchen (he’s quite the culinary expert also). We used to sit on the counter and measure, stir, sift, and slick anything we could. I have so many great memories in the kitchen!!

I have my mom’s blue eyes, long blonde hair, and smile. There are absolutely a million non-physical things I love about her, but it’s fun when people immediately know I’m her daughter or see pictures of her in college and think that it’s me.

MORE DOING! my mother taught me the lessons of frugality… we didn’t buy anything that wasn’t essential! she tore paper napkins in half (we had small mouths, so why waste an entire napkin on a child), we drank milk out of Smucker’s jelly jars (& then could have as much water as we wanted), she made breads, desserts and pies with fruit that had seen better days (we never could taste the yucky edges of the overripe fruit)… her frugal nature helped in lean times when my dad didn’t work… I never felt like we were lacking in ANYTHING. such valuable lessons that would serve our children now, in this age of instant gratification!!!

My mother has always done some sort of sewing or crafting and although I could never pick up knitting, I do love to make things for my house. This coming from a woman who was married young, had 5 kids, found out she had cancer and then left to be a single mother by her first husband. She beat cancer & met my dad as her first set of kids were nearing/in their teen years.

For some crazy reason after they married they wanted to have child together even though they had 6 between them already. I was born right before their 1st anniversary and right after she was diagnosed while pregnant with colon cancer a 2nd time. She missed almost all of my 1st year milestones due to being in the hospital of chemo or radiation but she made it to my 1st birthday, which they said she wouldn’t see because she would be dead. After that she also was able to homeschool me in elementary school, go back to college & get her degree in nursing, watch me graduate, get married, and see the birth of my son.

In her 70’s she’s still going strong after raising 7 children, chasing around 31 grandchildren, and throughly spoiling 11 great-grandchildren.

Cottage Cheese Pancakes, from Laura’s Kitchen
1 cup small curd Cottage Cheese
3 eggs
1/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 Tbsp melted butter

Layer all ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Cook & enjoy! Makes about 10 thin pancakes that kids & adults love. My favorite way to serve them is with lemon juice, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, and fresh strawberries.

Instead of just being a regular stay at home mom, she decided to open her own drapery and upholstery business out of our house. You don’t even realize how much you pick up by just watching. There are so many things that I do a certain way just beacuse she did too the same way (and the reason she does it is coz grandma did it that way). I think I also got the tireless energy from her, she is always doing something. Really thankful for everything you have given me.

More Doing. My mom is an utterly practical and no BS woman. I love it as you always no where you stand and if you are being reasonable. When you’re not, all it takes is a look from her and you know!

More Doing! My mother raised my two brothers and me basically on her own. When I was growing up I never realized everything that she did for us, but as I’ve matured, I’ve become much more aware. I learned so much from her and her determination to make sure we had everything that we needed.

More Doing! I have my mother’s laugh! People love to see us together and hear us laughing.

“MORE DOING!” I am so thankful my Mom taught me to problem solve and be resourceful with what I have.

Outside of some appearance similarities, I share a lot of personality traits with my mother. We’re both nosy, bossy and stubborn! It makes our time together interesting lol. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. My husband says that we’re so much alike that he’s seen a glimpse into our future since he knows exactly what I’ll be like in my 50’s.

More doing! I share my mom’s love for books and reading… although I don’t have quite the same urge to collect them as she does!

My mom is a huge believer in “Don’t ever pay full price for something if you don’t have to”. So we were the family who went to discount stores, used coupons, shopped at thrift store and garage sales before it was the “cool” thing to do! I take pride in myself now when people compliment on an outfit or decor item that I only paid a buck for! Thanks mom for your inherited cheapness!

MORE DOING! My mom gave me a love of laughter. We have this unique sense of humor that we share and are often hysterical about something while everyone else stares at us because they don’t get the joke.

More doing. My mom gave me her skill of multitasking.

MORE DOING! I’m grateful that my mom taught me how to bake. I can’t cook to save my life but chocolate cake? Rhubarb pie? Cinnamon rolls? I can sooo do that!

I inherited my mom’s creativity — art, crafts, drawing, painting, sewing….you name it! People say I’m crafty, but my mom is even better. :)

As much as I resented the idea in junior high, I inherited a lot from my mom – almost all of it wonderful! Just one example, the frugality that kept me from getting those name brand clothes growing up is now the frugality that has helped me to be financially comfortable. Didn’t like it then, but love the financial responsibility I learned from my mom.

My Mom is Mrs always prepared, a solution finder & a mcguyver Mom… I am usually prepared for most things & am big on problem solving. I definitely get that from her. :) Love her so much & am blessed that she’s my Mom. :)

My mom has taught me the true meaning of having strength because that is the only option! She had a massive brain tumor removed last year and has been a real hero with her complications this year!

It’s funny how as I get older, I notice more and more things that are just like my mom – a few of the best are her work ethic, compassion and caring for others, creativity, and drive to succeed. One of the not so good ones is procrastination, but some say it sparks last minute creativity, so it’s not too bad! :)

More Doing! My mom loved gardening and being outside so because of her I too love to garden! She also loved to cook and I still call her to this very day for cooking advice…almost every day!

My mom loves to take care of the family – big family gatherings are where she shines. I still strive to be as good as her at this and I think it really centers our family!

“MORE DOING!” My mom taught all of us to enjoy the little things in life and I’m ever so appreciate!

MORE DOING! My mom taught me how to fry chicken and make macaroni and cheese.

More Doing! My mom taught me (by example) to show grace under pressure, and to take good care of my family. She’s still going strong at 89!
