07.19.12 / Up for Auction

A lot of people have asked if we’ll be reusing the same ‘love’ headboard in our new bedroom. The answer is no. Let me explain.

Our bed lives under the window and I don’t want a headboard that covers the window. Placing a headboard in front of the window would require us to pull our bed out into the room a few more inches and I’d like to preserve as much space as possible for traffic flow.

So what shall become of our headboard? I’m donating it to an auction that will help fund expensive chemotherapy for a fellow alumna of my high school graduating class. Stephanie was diagnosed in December 2005 with osteosarcoma, a highly rare bone cancer. Over the last seven years, she has had to travel to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas for treatment. Recently, Stephanie was told by her doctors that she may be facing her toughest battle yet as her tumors continue to grow despite aggressive treatment. And the treatment isn’t covered by her insurance which leaves her with a monthly prescription bill of $6,200! Ouch! If you’re local, please consider attending the benefit tomorrow evening. More info here. If you aren’t local but still want to help out, you can make a donation at any Fifth Third bank under the name Stephanie Markham Minge.

I couldn’t think of a better purpose for our beLOVEd headboard.

FYI – Check out The Best of DIY Curators event over on Joss and Main. I’m so honored to be included in the roundup!

Oh Dana, what a beautiful use of your talent! So you do not plan on having a headboard at all? How will you dress the window above your bed?

I’d be thrilled to win that auction! And I agree with Lisa above, what a lovely use for the headboard.

Thank you so much for donating it to the Stephanie Markham Minge Party for a Purpose! We are beyond excited and we will definitely let you know how much it goes for in the auction.

Sending prayers for Stephanie! The message on the headboard is perfect for this.

What an amazing thing to do! Most of my patients are in the assessing treatment phase of their chemo and so many of them have had to quit jobs and take out loans just to cover medical bills. This will truly be a blessing for your friend!

Oh my gosh… I found your blog from pinterest & never realized how ‘close’ you are to me! My brother dated Stephanie.. We were on the swim team in Trenton with her & Angie. I saw a flyer for her benefit but cant attend, I am heading back to GA to get our home ready for my husband who is due home soon from Afghanistan. What a great thing you are doing for her…she is such a sweet, sweet person!!! xoxo

That is so kind and thoughtful of you! My older brother passed away from osteosarcoma when he was only 23 years-old. She and her family definitely have a tough road to travel. I will keep her in my prayers.

You are amazing, Dana — I love that you are using your talents in such an incredible way. My heart is so heavy today due to the Colorado tragedy, but you have helped show the love that is still in this world. :) Wishing the best for Stephanie…

Very cool, Dana. I thought at first that you were going to auction it off on eBay or something, but your idea is even better!
