...because home doesn't happen overnight.

Last weekend while I was stroking Rugby with a foam roller, HH was working on his own project.

Yep, we made it a personal goal to tackle the backsplash this month. After considering a slew of options, we went with our gut and used classic white subway tile – but with a twist. It’s longer than average giving it a sleek, modern profile.

I talked HH into contrasting grout. He wasn’t sure about it at first but when the first grout line went up, he was sold 100%. Once we get the kitchen put back together {i.e., rehang the open shelving which is getting tweaked as well} I’ll share our progress. M’kay?

Next up…

If you’re local maybe I’ll see you at Books by the Banks tomorrow meeting John & Sherry and the Novogratz’s! I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. I’ve never been to a book signing before. What do you say to authors? What do you wear? Is it okay to bring a baby? Is it okay if I say something really stupid, wear something I wear every day and bring my baby? Because that’s what I’m doing. I’m on the backend of a nasty respiratory virus so I’ll try not to cough on you.

Happy weekend! I hope you try one new thing.

I’m going to see John and Sherry tomorrow too! I’ve never been to a book event either and am super excited. No advice from me but they are bloggers so maybe you can connect on that level? I’m just a googly-eyed reader who could move into their house and feel perfectly at home!

Make sure u go to the book signing early! I went to the Bloggess and it was PACKED by the time I got there (30 minutes early) and the line to get a book signed was long, but thankfully went fast!

PS- I love the tile. Ive been considering it for my bathroom! cant wait to see it done!

Have fun! I didn’t even know this was going on here! Too bad my day is already packed with 4 kids schedules! Novagratz’s shouldn’t mind a baby! She may steal Mabrey from your arms. :) Also, you should take the boys and get Duck and Goose books signed! So cute! Hope the rain holds off for you! :)

That is the perfect back splash tile. I searched high and low for that tile when we re-did our kitchen, but I could not find it at a reasonable price. Where did you get it? I love it. I ended up going with the regular 3×6.I can’t wit to see it with the dark grout. I did white grout on mine.

i LOVE the backspalsh choice with contrasting grout. i regret not doing something similar in our new kitchen. anywho! so excited that you are going to meet John and Sherry! trying to convice hubby for us to go visit when they hit texas. it will be either when the go to austin or houston. either way it’s a drive for us. hope you get better and take some pics to post from the book signing.

I love the super-long subway tile. I’m always going back & forth on what color grout to use when we install ours, so I’m interested in seeing your results. I’m going to the YHL book signing in Minneapolis next month. I hope the lines aren’t too bad. I haven’t waited in line since Dave Matthews visited my university in 1998. Three kids later, I may be out of practice!

Ooo I love it. The look of subway, but still unique. The long tile is a touch more classy (we’ve got the regular so I’m not dissing it!). Point is- it looks great!

SOOO jealous you got to meet the Petersik’s. However I just want you to know that I find YOU just as cool as John and Sherry and if I got to meet YOU I would freak. :) You rock lady D! Hope you had a great weekend! :)

So exciting! Love them! I took my baby to Rees Drummond’s book signing, but I was there for sooooo long that my hubby ended up picking the baby up and taking her home…definitely get there early!

The tile you chose is so you! I love the simple modern lines, as well as the potential to change the look by your accessories, holiday decorations, etc. I think it’s so smart that because of the way that whole space is sorta BOGO, you have chosen to make timeless choices that will evolve with the rest of your home! I keep meaning to ask about your windowsills! Are they granite?? It seems like all the sills in the house are the same, save the br. I love the look and was curious. I love your blog and seriously lol at your writing style! Thank you so much for a bright spot in my day and some amazing inspiration!

Absolutley love the subway tile! If you don’t mind my asking where did you get it? I’m meeting with a possible contractor today about redoing some things in my kitchen and skinny white subway tile with dark grey grout is one of the things I’m planning on having done. I’m having a hard time finding skinny tile though. Thanks!

The windowsills in ALL the windows are slate. We love them! They’re one of the original things we didn’t want to touch. I think they’re actually really easy to clean and add a small bit of character.

22.October.2012

Love the long, skinny subway tile!! Are you going to do a cool accent tile under the hood?? I can’t wait to see the finished product…the tile adds so much more texture :)

23.October.2012

Is the backsplash tile 2×8? It’s beautiful!

24.October.2012

It’s 2″x12″ I’ll have more details soon when we get the kitchen put back together!

12.January.2014

beautiful! we’ve also chosen the elongated subway tile and built open shelving..What size spacing is this? 1/16th or 1/8th? We’re fairly confident that we’re using 1/16th to keep the look flowing, however the spacing looks to scale and great on your outlay- thanks!

We are searching desperately for a grout color for our backsplash and the answer may have been under our nose the whole time. I love the look of your grout. From far back, it looks gray, but up close it has a browner hue to it. When I googled it, it looks downright tan. Can you give me info on how it looks in person? You seem very happy with it. I guess I just want to know if it leans more towards gray or brown. I’m going for a warm gray, but so far all our tests have dried much lighter than expected. Thanks for any info you can give me.

10.February.2014

In person, it’s a medium taupe-y gray.

I was curious if you knew where the tan colored elongated subway tile comes from that you have pictured? I’m doing a backsplash and am wanting to use that color for a top and bottom border above and below antique white arabesque tiles. Thanks in advance for any info you could provide.
