...because home doesn't happen overnight.

barcelona bench 1

The horse blanket isn’t the only new thing at the foot of our bed. But before we get to it, let’s back up for a minute.

barcelona bench 2

Our bedroom is rectangular in shape. We placed the bed on one of the smaller walls, opposite the bathroom, which is really the only feasible location for a bed in this room. I haven’t mentioned it before but the area between the foot of our bed and bathroom is a decent size. And it has always felt a little empty. I’m all for open space in a room but it felt like something should be there – either a bench or a pair of ottomans. Something. I hadn’t taken it any further than that though. I mean, a bench wasn’t completely necessary and we were getting along fine without one.

Then one of my friendly sponsors, Rove Concepts, sent me an email asking if I might be interested in a piece of their furniture. I politely decline the majority of these types of requests because they don’t jive with my purpose and / or aesthetic. And I turned this one down as well. But six months later I received another email from them so I quickly glanced at their inventory to see if anything caught my eye. When I came across the Barcelona bench inspired by Mies van der Rohe, I was smitten. It was the ideal scale and style. I ordered the 52″ length in natural ash with a palermo caramel cushion. It had a twelve week lead time but finally arrived two weeks ago and it’s practically perfect in every way.

barcelona bench 3

As I was assembling it, Steve and I had a moment. We didn’t feel worthy of this bench. It’s a true work of art. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are impeccable. The bench is one of those forever pieces that’s crazy versatile. It’s sturdy and has a presence to it without feeling heavy…if that makes any sense. I like that it sits up off the floor with open space between the seat and floor. That gives it a lighter feel than, say, a slipcovered bench with a skirt.

barcelona bench 4

The leather is beautiful. It’s the perfect shade of caramel with flawless tufting and piping. It’s so soft, smooth and supple. Like butt’ah. It will only get better with age and wear. I love the natural patina that worn leather takes on over time. The warm hue of the cushion picks up on the wood tones of the nearby dresser, chair legs and bathroom mirror.

barcelona bench 5

Our bedroom can be a flurry of activity with three kids who like to romp on the bed and only one functioning bathroom which also happens to be the adjoining master bath.

Fun fact #1: I make the bed every morning but it rarely stays that way.

Fun fact #2: Sometimes there is a line for the potty in our bedroom.

Our bedroom definitely isn’t a kid-free zone. Often times, all five of us can be found hanging out in here. The bench sorta acts like a buffer for our bed and provides extra seating, too. It’s a welcome addition. (Mabrey loves climbing onto the bed via the bench.)

barcelona bench 6

I haven’t cheated on my mattress and taken the bench for a sleeping spin (yet!) but the thought has crossed my mind. And that awkward space between our bed and bathroom? It’s not awkward anymore. The bench shrunk the barren area but we still have plenty of room to move around without feeling cramped.

While I’m happily working for and claiming the Barcelona bench, I understand that it may overreach some budgets. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend it. However, if you’re in the market for a similar bench with a smaller price tag, may I suggest this, this or this?

I’m curious. Do you have anything at the foot of your bed? A bench, a pair of ottomans, a trunk? Maybe you prefer nothing?

Stay tuned for a Rove Concepts giveaway later today! I told you those peeps were friendly.

That bench is gorgeous. What an awesome find / gift / addition to your space! I love the lines…

18.February.2014

Ooh, that is beautiful!

18.February.2014

That bench is gorgeous and looks perfect in your bedroom. What fun is a kid-free zone anyway?

18.February.2014

oh. i. want. that.
beautiful!

Thats crazy- I just saw this the other day while trolling the internet. I love it and it’s always reassuring to know when something is quality made. That’s hard to find these days.

Random side note. I saw this post and it made me think of you and your boob speakers… Hope it helps!

18.February.2014

Looks good! If you thought the quality of the knock-off was awesome, imagine the quality of a real Barcelona bench by Mies Van Der Rohe.

18.February.2014

So in love with that bench!

18.February.2014

$995 is a bit steep but I’m sure it’s totally worth it. Thanks for sharing the similar items! I love this entire bedroom look.

18.February.2014

The perfect leather color. I’ve been lusting for a pair of club chairs in that color. On another note, can you tell me more about your rug? It looks great and I’ve been hunting for something like that

18.February.2014

What speakers?!

18.February.2014

I have bench envy!! It’s gorgeous and you’ll likely have it FOREVER! I just added a bench to the end of my bed. My bench used to be a fireplace mantle. One evening, I was staring at the mantle (a large chunky piece of wood) and thought, “this would make a great bench.” So a friend took it off the wall, sawed it into three pieces, added bolts, and voila, a bench was born! Always great to have a good story behind every piece!

The boob speakers in your living room- she used these two and I don’t know anything about technology but I thought they could work. I thought you weren’t happy with the boob speakers.

LOVE that bench! I just added a bench to the end of our bed, but it is much simpler and less drop dead gorgeous :-) http://allpreciousandpleasant.com/2014/02/18/bench-reupholstery-before-after/

What is the wall color in your bedroom?

18.February.2014

Love the nail heads! The color on our bedroom walls is Benjamin Moore half moon crest.

18.February.2014

I’m pretty sure every room in your house is now on my home inspiration Pintrest board. And I love the bench! It really grounds the bed and I’m sure it must be crazy functional, too. I have an Ikea Bekvam stool at the end of my bed, but it can’t stay there – my room is much to small to put anything there permanently. Ah, the sorrows of renting…

18.February.2014

I meant “what speakers?!” in a sarcastic way. Sorry it didn’t come across that away. LOVE speakers that are flush with the wall (we have a pair on a wall in our living room opposite the TV) so you know I love those! The boob speakers aren’t my favorite but I think I’m getting used to them.

18.February.2014

you deserve it girl! what a beautiful piece, perhaps one day I can splurge. I love how this room has transformed with every new layer. How do you do it? I would love a post about how your style has changed. My style has changed also, and I am having a hard time working with what I have and making changes. We have similar tastes…..I finally purchased a masculine couch, Darrin from JcPenney, and I need pointers on how to “soften” up the leather and make it more organic…any thoughts?

18.February.2014

Yes, yes, yes to the bench. Nice to see how you incorporate different things and they all just work. At the end of our bed we’ve got a trunk (that was my great-grandmother’s and her brother built it for her) and we love it. But the kids love it more – perfect for climbing. :)

Ha! I feel ridiculous. I thought, “I know it was her who had boob speakers. Who else couldve had them?” I can’t be helped.

18.February.2014

Barcelona or bust!

I adore that bench. Your home inspires me! Such a beautiful family and home! My style snd my home are always evolving. Would love to incorporate a piece like this !!! Thank you for the giveaway !

18.February.2014

Looks great! Are you still planning to paint the room Anchor Gray? I have been dying to paint our master a dark blue/gray so I’ve anxiously been waiting pictures from you :) Although your current wall color is lovely too!

18.February.2014

We decided against the anchor gray for now. I LOVE dark bedrooms but I don’t know if our north-facing bedroom could handle it. My husband and I really like the current soothing color of the walls but if I get bored in a few years (which could most definitely happen) I know what color I would try next!

Oh Dana! I just can’t quit you! The bench looks awesome. I love how you are so incredibly intentional with your design choices. It makes for amazing spaces. It’s just perfect in you room:)

18.February.2014

It looks too low to me. I am sure Mabrey likes having the lower platform. Your house is starting to come together. Congrats on the bench.

Oh Barcelona bench is awesome. I love it. I love it almost I love Barcelona chairs. I agree with you: they are almost a piece of art. Good choice!

18.February.2014

Ooh! I like it! I stole two ottomans from our leather Siesta chairs (they were crowding our den) to use at the end of our bed. Hubby likes having a place to sit to put on his socks in the morning and the little one uses them to gain access to our bouncy bed in the afternoons. I love that I was able to re-purpose them!

18.February.2014

I was torn between your third suggestion (the white leather) or the bench you have as a coffee table when we needed something narrow for our living room. After you answered some questions for me we ended up getting the wood bench and it’s perfect. But that white one… still thinking about where I could fit it in.

Your bench is beautiful, but I almost feel like there’s a missed opportunity with the legs. A brass finish with that lovely warm caramel leather would look more… timeless..?

18.February.2014

Love the rug…where is it fromm? Is it soft?

That is truly a beautiful piece of furniture.

Unfortunately I don’t have the space but I love the idea of a bench at the end of a bed to avoid messing up the bed by sitting down to put on shoes.

18.February.2014

The rug is from Overstock. It’s the most expensive rug we own and the quality shows. It is a jute with chunky loops. I don’t know if I would describe it as soft. It has a bumpy texture underfoot but the fibers are silky – not itchy or scratchy. It shed a little the first month but doesn’t shed anymore.

18.February.2014

Thanks Shavonda!

18.February.2014

Flat-out gorgeous. We have a basic Crate & Barrel trunk. It holds all the bedding for that room but sits 7″ off the floor for some open space. It’s useful and works for what I need there. Your bench, on the other hand, IS a functional piece of art.

Any tentative timetable for the 2nd bathroom?

18.February.2014

that really is beautiful – lucky you! i’d totally take a nap on that caramel leather. mmm x

It looks as if the bench was designed just for your room. It’s perfect! I have a leather, espresso bench/oversized ottoman at the end of our bed. I like yours better though.:-)

“Barcelona or bust”

Someone mentioned bench envy! That really describes how I feel – smile!
I’m originally an Iowa girl, so where did you purchase the horse blanket?
Love your blog!

18.February.2014

The gorgeous bench is perfect for the space, and it’s very you. I’m so glad you get to enjoy it. And if your bed ever leaves for the weekend, maybe what it wouldn’t know wouldn’t hurt it? :)

18.February.2014

Haha!

18.February.2014

We contacted our plumber today about the tub and shower fittings so…!!!!…he comes Thursday to get those in place. Then the fun begins!

18.February.2014

I love your stripes on stripes bedroom! And I have the same open space at the foot of the bed. Your new bench fits perfectly. Barcelona or bust!

18.February.2014

Barcelona or bust!
I started reading your blog this past fall when my husband was trying to talk me into getting a steel roof for our new to us 1950’s brick ranch house. After that I was hooked! I was binge reading all of your past posts for weeks until I was all caught up to the present. You are inspiring many of our future renovations and designs; tweaked to our exact tastes of course. Thank you for being so real, honest and inspirational! And the bench and chairs are gorgeous!!!!
Colie D

18.February.2014

i would love a bench, but am too darn klutzy to have anything there! thanks for posting the less expensive options, not all blogs think about us non-sponsored peeps.

19.February.2014

Exciting! I remember the saga of the tub legs and the inspiration images for wooden supports instead. Just having a functional 2nd bathroom for a family of 5 will be progress, decor aside. :)

19.February.2014

That bench is gorgeous! The color of the leather is absolutely beautiful. Great pick. I noticed they also have vintage leathers to choose from. Were you able to see samples of the leather options first-hand before choosing? I’m a sucker for vintage leather.

19.February.2014

Barcelona or bust!
The bench looks great Dana!

19.February.2014

You can request up to six free swatches here…

I didn’t look at any swatches. I was sold on the palermo caramel right off the bat.

19.February.2014

I keep telling Steve it’s going to be such a luxury having TWO bathrooms! Like we live in a mansion or something. Haha.

19.February.2014

I LOVE the use of a horse blanket! Very Scandinavian. Love your blog, totally going to follow!

Thanks!

19.February.2014

Barcelona or bust! These are my favorite chairs ever! There are 2 at the house we stay at on Sanibel Island that we all LOVE–so comfy! The bench–and everything in your house is gorgeous!

20.February.2014

I said it once I will say it again. I have a huge crush in your bedroom. Its really beautiful, its masculine but full of texture and warm colors that will make any woman happy and comfortable as well. I think ur style is evolving beautifully and ur designer eye is impeccable. I hope that you will be a very successful designer.

20.February.2014

that bench is KILLER. i am so sad that i didn’t get to meet you at alt. i love everything you are doing in your home. gawgeous. also, we just got those same lights for our bedroom and i think they are so great.

21.February.2014

Loving that bench too! We don’t have one, but I’ve been thinking about getting one… Oh well, maybe someday, because for now I’m still busy preparing the baby room for our second baby boy (due in April), and we just finished painting our own bedroom. It looks way more softer and fresher with the grey/pink hues now, so I love it. And such a cool bench like yours would fit in perfectly – after we get ourselves a new, cooler bed. :-D
I love your bedding too, where did you get it?
Much love, Inge x

21.February.2014

The bedding is DwellStudio.

21.February.2014

holy hell that is perfection! what a lovely bench. Perhaps I should start saving up for one…I agree that it’s a piece you’re going to own forever. gorgeous. love your thrifted blanket as well! i have really loved seeing your home come together.

23.February.2014

Great job, I love the space and the bench is boss!

23.February.2014

I LOVE that bench! We keep a trunk at the foot of our bed. It’s an early 1900s trunk that belonged to my great-grandmother’s family, and it is filled with my great grandmother’s costume jewelry, some things like the clutch my grandmother used for her wedding, her costume jewelry, and some of my grandfather’s WW2 and Korean War memorabilia from his Marine and Civil Air Patrol days. The trunk is in pretty rough condition but I love it, and hope it is treasured by members of my family many decades from now.

27.February.2014

I think you’ve sourced nearly everything in the bedroom by now, but did you say where the headboard is from? Maybe I missed it. The whole thing is very nice!

27.February.2014

It’s the nailhead upholstered headboard in the gray haze, brushed heathered cotton from West Elm.

[…] Favorite bench. […]

26.March.2014

Ever since I saw this I have been dreaming of recreating this look in my bedroom. Can you tell me where you got that lovely gray, white and “mustard” duvet/blanket on your bed!? I’ve been looking for something similar and I’m also considering trying to sew my own. Thanks, love the blog!

26.March.2014

It’s DwellStudio’s draper stripe in ash.

30.August.2014

Dana,
I have been searching your sourcing and comments trying to figure out which jute rug that is in your room since you mentioned it is soft and not scratchy? I know it’s from over stock but do you remember the name? Thanks so much, Megan

30.August.2014

Sure, it’s the Sahara boucle weave jute rug (9′ x 12′). Here’s a direct link…

22.March.2016

Your bedroom is perfect in every way. I’m finally getting around to decorating our master and am so inspired by yours! The bedding seems modern but still versatile as styles change. Any ideas where I could find something similiar?

18.June.2017

Gorgeous all over the place! Your pic shows the Draper Stripe Ash duvet cover AND pillow cases (clearly a pillow case), but I can’t find it. All I’ve seen are sham covers (rectangular and square with mustard colored flanges on all four sides). Pleeeeeez help me find pillow cases such as you show. Brenda
