The last few weekends have been good to us. No snow, no traveling, no big projects, lots of exploring. It’s been wonderful having a wide open schedule and making (or not making) plans on a whim. I feel like much of the time Steve and I are tag-teaming our parenting responsibilities, so it’s nice when we actually get to do something all together as a family. And it’s more fun being a present parent than a serious one with a never-ending schedule.

This past weekend we visited the Dayton Art Institute and it was perfection. The kids were in awe and asked tons of questions. (They were mostly questions about boobs.) Sometimes I forget that we have one of the best art museums for kids in our backyard. If you’re ever in Dayton, Ohio, you should check it out. It’s not too big, not too small. A current exhibition, The Last Supper by Julie Green, was especially moving and it sparked an interesting conversation with our oldest. I love it when art does that.

I’m also loving…

*The hits of black and dark olive in this row house by Mazen Studio.

*Benita’s DIY bar cabinet featuring a Superfront door.

*Sunset’s special small space style issue. (So fun to see familiar homes in a different way!)

*The kid-friendly lunchbox of my dreams.

*I carried a watermelon.

*The idea of a zero waste home. (Not sure I have the discipline to hit zero but every little bit helps, right?)

*Clare’s new large format prints. Use the discount code HOUSETWEAKING at checkout to score 15% off any purchase.

*A gauzy, floral robe for the summer ahead. (I wish it had been in my hospital bag when I had my babies!)

P.S. – It’s snowing now.

I have that lunch box and while it is a large investment I can’t imagine being without it. It goes in the dishwasher and looks as good as the day we bought it. It will last for many years. The case is dirty but is holding up well.

I’ve been wanting to take my kids to the Dayton Art Institute lately too! We live in Washington Township and I keep think I’ll run into you. :) When I first started reading your blog, a couple things stuck out to me: my husband is a pharmacist and I also do Tracy Anderson workouts (although you wouldn’t be able to tell because I love to eat and eat and eat.). Anyways, I admire your decorating style and your healthy lifestyle. And can’t wait til you open your studio to the public. My kid and I would love it.

Wow, that art institute looks beautiful! That house tour on Domain is a good one. Awesome round-up!

“And it’s more fun being a present parent than a serious one with a never-ending schedule.”

Seriously. I think about this all of the time. Why can’t there be time for more of the fun?!

Ok, no more complaining about the cold up here in Michigan – please don’t send the snow our way!!

Great links, btw. I still miss Chez Larsson and can’t believe I haven’t been following Benita on Instagram. That bar is awesome, of course. I love the message on the Superfront site: Welcome! In your country only handles and legs can be ordered. womp, womp.

Now to attempt to talk my husband into buying that I carried a watermelon print for my bday! I love that cheesy movie and that’s such a great line. :D

thanks for sharing!

All my kids have the Planet Box lunchbox and it was worth every penny. I think they’re 3 years old and look as good as new. The lunch boxes, not the kids! ;-)

Thanks for making ME smile! Those Last Supper plates are mind blowing. Art is such an amazing part of our world, and I’m glad that there are still people that value sharing it with their children (and discussing difficult things like boobs…and the death penalty??). That Mazen Studio decor is phenomenal. I always love your posts and check in daily to see what’s new.

Another PlanetBox fan here. We’ve had ours for 3 years and it still looks brand new. The case didn’t last as long, and I didn’t love how it looked, so I found a neoprene laptop bag that worked perfectly. It’s an investment, but when I’m half asleep and shoving food into organized little compartments, it makes me happy.

Thank you for the discount code Dana! I ordered Married to the Sea. I’ve had my eye on that one and have just the right spot for it in my house!

love the lunch box. wondering if I can get it for my 27 year old boyfriend…

24.March.2015

I (not so) secretly want one for myself.

24.March.2015

Congrats! I have several of Clare’s prints. Visitors always compliment them.

24.March.2015

I just shelled out $$$ for three of them. I’m hoping they make the dreaded task of packing lunches a little more bearable or even FUN!

24.March.2015

SOLD. Just ordered three of them.

I love seeing what Benita is up to over on instagram! She shares her current projects via these cute and tidy flipagram videos that are instant. gratification. LOVE. Superfront needs to make its way across the ocean!

24.March.2015

I feel that way all the time. We need to set aside time for fun!

24.March.2015

Can’t wait to run into each other!

25.March.2015

Seriously!!! The “I carried a watermelon” print is no longer available!!!! Heartbroken!

Quotes are a marvelous idea for home decoration. I think it’s both creative and motivational. Still, “I carried a watermelon” is exhilarating :)

One day I somewhat accidentally made an entirely orange lunch (carrots, cheez-its, oranges, orange M&Ms, and a sandwich on orange-ish wheat bread). I stuck a post-it that said “Orange you glad I made your lunch,” and was a mom hero.

We LOVE the Planet Boxes! Ordered one for my son for preschool when he was 3 and it still looks new (he’s about to turn 8). We did get a new case this year, but that’s a minimal purchase. A few years ago they sold the PBs in Pottery Barn Kids, we picked up another for my daughter for $20 as it was “last year’s fabric pattern.” She’s not in full-time school yet, but loves the days she’s in lunch bunch at her preschool. My husband ended up buying one of the larger sized ones for himself, he loves the glass container for leftovers and it’s still big enough for sandwiches, wraps, etc. I hope you love them as much as we do!

We need new lunch boxes…maybe I should give Planet Box a try. They look amazing and I’ve heard nothing but glowing reviews from everyone. I just worry my son will loose it at school :-/

I first heard of Bea Johnson and her zero waste home thru Sunset Magazine years ago and soon started looking thru her blog. I have always been so impressed and just floored by how this family is able to live. Not only is their house zero waste, but they live an extremely minimalist lifestyle. She literally can fit her ENTIRE wardwrobe in a carry-on suitcase! I have been striving to live more and more like this family, but we still have a L O N G ways to go. Very inspiring though. Didn’t know she had a book out so thanks for sharing that. I love every book you recommend (and my Amazon wish list is proof of that ;-) Keep it coming!
