The day after Christmas, while on the way to my house for our big family Christmas, our 37 yr. old son stopped to help a motorist who’d had an accident on an icy overpass. Within minutes a Jeep slid on the ice, hitting first our son and then the other driver. Miraculously our son had no broken bones or internal injuries. Three weeks after the accident we gathered to celebrate his birthday. I feel God gave us the gift of his life twice. We were together for Easter and I still found myself looking at him and thinking of the “what ifs”. We could have so easliy lost him.

So today, Dana, I am celebrating with you the gift of Everett’s life and his recovery! Happy Birthday, Everett!!

I was hit by a car once at the age of 6 (crossing the road when I shouldn’t have been), and I had a bad bike accident at the age of 11 that smashed my front teeth, resulting in two root canals and a partial replacement. Life is an adventure when you are an adventurer :) One of my favorite quotes is : Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgement that something is more important than fear. My children are required to have their helmets on if they are on anything with wheels and snowboarding. (Mom and Dad too) It is widely accepted on the ski slopes, but they get flack around the neighborhood. I work on the rehabilitation unit at a large hospital and see a lot of things. Sadly not too many other children have helmets on when biking, blading, etc. Good for you, Dana.

I’m a long time follower of your site. I live in NYC, work for a magazine company and live a completely different life from you. I don’t have a husband or children. I don’t own my home. I have never had the fun (or the stress) of installing kitchen cabinets or a new bathtub. I love my life, but sometimes, it’s really fun to check into another universe and live vicariously through you. I’m so sorry your son was hurt and I hope he is OK. I’ve thought of you every day since your last post. I want you to know that your blog gives people joy (and good advice!). Sometimes, when I have a really stressful day at the office, it’s just so good to read about your nursery redecoration or about how you installed a new entrance to your attic. I’m amazed by your independent choices – I have never had the guts to quit a job or build my own business. Your family is beautiful and I’m sure you will weather any storm. Don’t think that your blog entries are ever trivial! They have really mean a lot to me, in a really unusual way. Take care and I wish the best of health to your little one.

Dana, I had drafted this happy birthday message for Everett on the 7th, but thought it best to leave a little breathing room and see how he’s doing before leaving it. I just read your latest update and I cannot believe what your little man went through. Here’s what I was hoping to write …

“Happiest of birthdays, Everett, all the way from Dublin, Ireland.

My heart nearly fell out of my chest when I read what happened to you. I’m so glad to hear you’re soldiering through it. I know it’s nowhere similar to what you’re going through, but when I was around your age I was at a baseball game and a fly ball hit me in the face. I broke my nose, had to get lots of surgery and wore a cast on my face for a month. A doctor told me if I had left my seat seconds earlier the ball could have hit me in the temple. My point being, while things will be really tough right now, this will all make for quite the dinner story when you’re older.

Stay strong.”

Oh, my…. I step here after a two months of absence, because I wanted to take a break from internet and media. And it hit me, the post about Everett… As a mom of two little girls I felt happiness knowing that he’s just fine. Very Happy Birthday Everett.
