...because home doesn't happen overnight.

After scoping out the homestead in search of my likes and dislikes here and then gathering an assortment of small lovables here, I was ready to look for design inspiration beyond the walls of my suburban shelter.  According to Real Simple, the next step in finding my style was to close my eyes and think of places I love to be and why.  I was encouraged to step outside the constraints of real life (where money and time don’t exist) and picture my dream home.  Where would it be?  I was also asked to recall favorite books, paintings or movies.  And finally, in full fantasy mode, I was to put together my Oscars award night look complete with jewelry and shoes.  I’m not gonna lie…Step Three was fun!

First, my favorite places to be…

the land where I grew up:  high on a hill overlooking the valley with a calming pond and acres of woods to spare

Grandview Drive back in P-town (Peoria, IL) looking out over the Illinois River

And since I’m dreaming, New Zealand (ok, I’ve never been there but Handy Hubby has and his pictures are amazing!)

Next, my dream home(s)…

a modern cottage-like craftsman style home nestled in the woods

Onto my favorite booksEat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and my childhood fave Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

My favorite moviesO Brother, Where Art Thou?; Garden State; Hope Floats; Amelie

My favorite paintings:  anything by Georgia O’Keeffe  (An Orchid below)

Finally, if I got invited to the Oscars I would wear something neutral: white, gold, black, taupe, ivory maybe even navy.  I probably wouldn’t choose any bold colors like red, orange, yellow or pink.  The style would be simple and classic with a twist.  Nothing too frilly or fancy shmancy.  I’d wear my hair down or loosely pulled back.  Accessories would be kept to a minimum – one stunning bracelet or killer earrings.  Shoes would be comfortable but provide a little added heighth – I’m only 5’3″.  My makeup would be natural with a hint of shimmer.  I like these looks…

In case you’re wondering, George Clooney would be my date.  (Not to worry, Handy Hubby.  You’d be on the arm of Jessica Biel.)

There you have it.  My fantasy world full of fresh air, trees, land, water, craftsman cottages, quirky movies, spiritual books, paintings embedded with sexual innuendos, classic dresses and George Clooney.  Oh, bestill my heart.  Be sure to check in later for the hard part…trying to make sense of all these steps!
