...because home doesn't happen overnight.
04.23.12 / Instaweek

With three kiddos {one of them being a newborn which requires a hefty diaper bag and baby miscellaneous} in tow, I’ve found it difficult to lug around my real camera. Recently, I’ve been opting to leave the camera bag at home and use my iPhone instead. And that’s when I discovered Instagram, a free app that allows you to take pictures on your iPhone, quickly transform their look and feel, then share them. Instagram is not replacing my camera for good but it is a lighter, easier alternative.

I thought sharing weekly snippets of my Instagram pics would be fun. Let’s check out last week.

We finally had our Bagster picked up. No one likes to talk about waste the day after Earth Day but, let’s face it, trash happens. Our Bagster mostly contained scrap flooring pieces, tiling waste {grout, thinset, etc.}, non-recyclable packaging and other items. The cardboard and plastic bags that you see weren’t able to be recycled because we used them for tiling prep {i.e. they had grout and thinset all over one side of them}. We called for pick up on a Thursday and the Bagster was gone by Monday. The Bagster itself was less than $30 and pickup was ~$90. It’s a good option for jobs smaller than dumpster status but larger than our Danger Ranger truck bed.

Raw smoothies are a quick and easy way for me to meet my daily fruit & veggie requirements postpartum. The hardest part is cleaning the blender afterwards. I’ve found several delicious recipes that don’t call for added sugar in the form of yogurt. My boys love them too! After following a few of the recipes to a T, I’ve strayed and started concocting my own raw smoothies successfully. Anyone interested in a smoothie post?

Somebody loves their Miracle Blanket.

I’ve been spending a lot of time at my dad’s lately. My grandma & grandpa are visiting from Florida and staying there. They like to cuddle a certain little lady and I can’t deny them. This shot was taken from my dad’s front porch. Yep. That’s the view from my childhood home. And to think I ever declared living there ‘BORING’?! What I wouldn’t give for a view like that from my own home now.

That’s my grandpa with Mabrey. He would have never guessed he’d make it onto the Internets. Yes, the Internets plural. I blame him for my home lovin’ blood. He’s bought and renovated, oh I don’t know, more than a dozen houses. In fact, he just closed on a fixer-upper in Florida before coming for a visit. And he’s in his late 70’s. Exactly, what I’ll be doing in my late 70’s if I’m in as good as shape as him! His mother {my great grandmother} is Mabrey’s namesake. Her maiden name was Larew, Mabrey’s middle name.

That’s my grandpa’s partner in crime, my grandma, with Mabrey. I blame her for my mad cleaning skills. Although I’m not anywhere near her caliber. That woman can clean a house like nobody’s business. My grandpa messes ’em up and she cleans ’em up! Sound familiar?

Sorry for MIA last week. I was so sleep deprived I don’t think my posts would have been coherent. Handy Hubby is doing his part to control the worldwide population today…the ol’ sniparoo. Like I told HH, I’m really glad we have Layne, Everett & Mabrey but I’m good. Life with three kids is no joke.

Things may be a little slow this week due to techy blog stuff. But it’s all good. Lots of changes coming to House*Tweaking!

For your camera-carrying woes, check this camera bag out: http://shootsac.com/toteandshootcamerabag.aspx It was designed by a professional photog out of Orange County, CA who recently became a Mom and wanted a diaper bag/camera bag option. It’s great even for a non-Mom!! :)

23.April.2012

I vote for a smoothie post!

23.April.2012

Smoothies!! Smoothie recipes, please!! It’s so hard to find healthy snacks for kids (& adults) that aren’t loaded with sugar & chemicals :)

Mabrey’s looking snug as a bug in that blanket, too cute!!

23.April.2012

I’d love a raw smoothie post. We eat mostly paleo but I’m not the biggest smoothie fan – maybe you can change my mind. :-) And funny on the sniparoo. Did I mention that we found out we were preggo with #3 the DAY BEFORE hubby had his sniparoo? No joke. Shock of the century!

23.April.2012

I just started following you on Instagram – I’m excited to see more baby Mabrey pictures! :) If you want to follow me, my username is lilsuzy. :)

23.April.2012

There’s nothing like great-grandparents! : )

Also, I’d fancy a smoothie post. I’ve been eyeballing a Ninja blender… is that what you use? I’ve read good reviews on them.

23.April.2012

Oh my, that porch view is gorgeous! Smoothies are pretty much the best ever.

23.April.2012

Such a loving family =) And a smoothie post would be stellar! I always slightly cringe at the ones with yogurt in them…

23.April.2012

love the pics and the update! i’m so interested in hearing more about your smoothies. i just started making them myself and haven’t branched out much with new ones.

23.April.2012

Would love a smoothie post!!!!! That view is amazing…..I like when I am able to appreciate the little things from my childhood as an adult. Mabry has the most beautiful lips :) Love that your grandpa is still fixin up houses….

23.April.2012

I’m definitely interested in a smoothie post! No matter what I do, mine always taste like health sludge.

23.April.2012

I’d love a smoothie post! I have them daily for breakfast and am always looking for new ideas. Here’s a quick cleaning tip for you: after pouring out my smoothie, I add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the carafe, fill it up halfway with water, and blend for about 20-30 seconds. Afterwards I just rinse it out and let it dry. I’ve never had a problem with it not being clean and I don’t have to touch the blades. Hope that helps!

Mabrey is just beautiful and I LOVE her name!

23.April.2012

Yes I second/third/fourth a smoothie post – I try not to use added sugar or dairy. Toughie! Good luck to your beautiful family!

23.April.2012

Would love a smoothie post! We call them Green Monsters here…spinach, almond milk, banana, any random fruit we have about to go bad (pineapple, mango and splash of O.J. is our current favorite) and a few tsp of flax seed. My oldest won’t touch fruit (but would eat his body weight in vegetables) so he steers clear, but my younger two love them! New ideas would be welcome…we make them most mornings!

23.April.2012

Look at her lips! Adorable!!

Smoothie post…fa sho! sounds delish! :)

23.April.2012

Awww….what a cutie!! Welcome to the wonderful world of THREE KIDS….It’s a wild ride, but a good one!

And, I’m right there with you on the iPhone thing…..It takes such awesome pics, it just makes sense to have something slim to pull out on a whim. :)

Congrats!

I would love a smoothie post! I’m due in August but i could definitively kicked it up a notch with the fruits and veggies!

23.April.2012

smoothie post please!
I want a vitamix very badly but not in the budget. sigh. but am hoping my blender will suffice.

23.April.2012

Don’t apologize for being MIA last week. I am in awe of how much you have been able to post with a new baby in the house.

I too would love a smoothie post!

23.April.2012

Yes to a smoothie post!

23.April.2012

Yes to a smoothie post!

My hubby had is sniparoo 5 mo after our second..we were done and no need to keep playing the contraception game if it can be taken care of with short procedure!

23.April.2012

I love all of them, Gramps, Gram, and Mabrey! We need to get together soon! Your Grandma looks awesome btw – it must be all of that dancing she does!

23.April.2012

Thanks for the update! I just had my 3rd as well and you are not kidding…..it is no joke! I know some people had told me that going from 1 to 2 was harder than going from 2 to 3….but for me…this 3rd is the game changer! Hang in there! Love your instagram pics!

23.April.2012

Smoo-thie post! Smoo-thie post! Smoo-thie post!!!!
Pardon my chant, but I would love a smoothie post!

23.April.2012

Do you use a vita mix? I have been considering buying one. I currently have the tribest personal blender which is SOOO easy to clean and blends right inteh cup. and can blend spinach with OJ into a frothy goodness I cant get enough of. I have tried alll the various personal blenders– ninja, magic bullet, JC pennies brand ect. The tribest is the cream of the crop.

23.April.2012

My favotite recipe is frozen mango cubes, trop 50 OJ and tons of spinach. Heaven in a cup.

23.April.2012

Yes to a smoothie post! I’ve found they’re a great go to breakfast since I became a mom and would love more recipes. Mabrey is so beautiful! Thanks for spoiling your readers with so many beautiful newborn photos

23.April.2012

Smoothie post, please!

23.April.2012

Blender cleaning tip: squeeze a teeny bit of soap in the blender, put in some water and whiz it in the blender. Then rinse and dry.

Easy peasy

23.April.2012

I’d love a smoothie post, too! Congrats on the old’ sniparoo :). I thought I might feel a little sad that that option was officially gone, but the sadness never materialized! Mabrey is such a doll. Thanks for sharing her with us.

23.April.2012

Her hair is hysterical! I hope she soon has the personality to match.

I’m right there with you on the smoothies. If you don’t already have one, I highly recommend an immersion blender for a super-quick, minimal cleanup smoothie for one. It gets me out the door in 1 minute with a healthy breakfast in hand.

23.April.2012

Yes, smoothie post please!

23.April.2012

Adding my vote to those requesting a smoothie post…I make them all the time, but they always use yogurt, so I’d love some more options (that someone else can actually vouch for).

23.April.2012

A smoothie post would be delicious please. I’d like to salute HH on his commitment to your family :) and will show my hubs this post when the time is right!

23.April.2012

I’d be in favor of a smoothie post. All the food in the blender looked……..interesting.

23.April.2012

Yes to smoothies! And I just adore your sweet little babe. She is too precious for words!

23.April.2012

I would love a smoothie post! I love them so much but they never taste good when i try them at home for some reason! Mabrey is beautiful by the way!

23.April.2012

Mabrey has more hair than my 1 year old baby girl! Oh and smoothie post please!

23.April.2012

PLEEESE don’t apologise for being MIA – we’d forgive you for being MIA for several months! That smoothie looks awesome. Washing up though, ugh, I’m with you on that. I’ve often thought of trying to do a smoothie with a handheld blender: less washing up? – might try that later. Mabrey is gorgeous, so lovely to see she has great-grandparents. Silly me left having kids till my 40’s, so no g-g’s for my girls. They look proud as punch.

23.April.2012

Yes please to a smoothie post.

I second Caro’s blender cleaning advice — water, dish soap, and blend. (I probably put it in the dishwasher every fifth time or so.)

Favorite smoothie? Frozen pear pieces, milk, Carnation Instant Breakfast powder (chocolate), agave syrup. No veggies, obviously, but soooo good.

24.April.2012

Ok, so for my record, what does MIA mean, please ? I’m right there with you Millers ! Keep up with the good job and Dana, share whatever you’re able to share … smoothies, tile, grout, kitchen, whatever ! Take care ! ps : it seems that you went for a blog remodel …

24.April.2012

Beautiful pics of a beautiful family! I would love a smoothie post! I drink them pretty regularly, but it’s always nice to see new recipes. Oh and @Ariane, MIA means missing in action!

Mabrey is beautiful!

24.April.2012

Another vote for a smoothie post! I love them for breakfast but I need new recipes and ideas. I loved the pictures, precious Mabrey and your grandparents, you’re lucky they are still here!

24.April.2012

I love the pictures!! :) Mabrey is adorable and the small stories you shared about your grandparents–i love them! :)
I most definitely want a smoothie post!

24.April.2012

how lucky to have great-grandparents–my grandmother lived until 96, so my kids really got to know her well, I felt so blessed.

I need your HH can convince my HH to get the snip–I’m just over 40, but my body is still in the baby-making stage, even though my brain is long past it! hope HH has a quick recovery!

24.April.2012

Thanks to Britny W !

24.April.2012

What a beautiful baby Mabrey is! I’d be up for a smoothie post. We have a place called Daily Juice nearby and I pretty much get daily smoothies there, so it would be fun to hear what you are doing at home. And isn’t instagram fun??

What a great view to grow up with.

24.April.2012

Yes, yes, yes on the smoothies post! My tried and true banana, yogurt, and orange juice is getting a little old. I’ve been looking to add veggie, knowing to start with just a tad of spinach, but I can’t seem to dive in.

The Mabrey shots are killing me, she’s adorable! I think you’ve officially convinced me I need a 4th. Every little girl needs a sister right? Think of me when you sell all that baby stuff….seeing as I JUST sold ours. :(

For better or for worse, I use my iphone camera way more than any other camera that I have. It’s always available and has all of the fun bells and whistles just like instagram. Beautiful photos!

Cara

26.April.2012

Just finished reading every post from the purchase of The Underdog till now… H*T is for sure my new favorite design blog! And little Mabrey is precious, precious. Can’t wait to see what else is in store for your sweet family :)

30.April.2012

i love that pre-blend photo ~ i can see all the ingredients.
smoothie post, yes please : )

and i just can get over your sweet mabrey!
and i think she really looks like her mama.

30.April.2012

oops… “can’t” get over

01.May.2012

yep, a smoothie post is wanted. i’ve been making about two a day – with enough spinach to kill popeye and need some variety. pretty please?! (and congrats on baby, house, happy life)

01.May.2012

I would love a post about smoothies!!!
I recently bought a breville juicer and have been trying to get more goodness into my diet. Please post!
By the way, absolutely love your blog and love reading about your adventures..keep’em coming!
Congrats on baby girl too :)

03.May.2012

just found your site and am impressed. Three kids is a handful and I think more of us husbands would go for the snip if more men said it’s OK. So I am hear to say 21yrs and not a regret. Pass it on.
Thanks for all your great ideas.
