IKEA 2017

The 2017 IKEA catalog is out! Have you had a chance to pore over it yet? Each year I share my takeaways and this year is no different. I received my copy last week and finally had a chance to look it over. I made a list of the items and ideas that caught my eye. I thought I would share them with you today. In an effort to avoid ruining the novelty for others, I won’t be sharing photos of each item. I’d love for you to experience the catalog on your own then refer to my list if you feel inclined. If you don’t have a catalog in your hands, you can view it online here. (I’ve linked to most items within the post, but this narrative is really meant to accompany the catalog as some items and ideas aren’t listed online.) Let’s get started!

pg. 10, 11, 196 The NORRARYD dining chair is a modern take on the traditional Windsor chair. I love the scale. (The back isn’t too high.) It comes in three versatile colors: black, white and red.

pg. 24, 25 I love the DIY coffee table idea! The open storage and lower profile make it ideal for smaller and/or open concept spaces. You could stash books, games and toys in the base. I’d love it even more if the crates were reclaimed or vintage. I would get creative with the top. What about butcher block, painted plywood, remnant marble or feather-finish laminate?

pg. 30, 177 You can’t go wrong with a big, inexpensive stockpot like the VARDAGEN.

pg. 56-57 I need to see them in person, but I feel like the TORHAMN cabinet fronts could work well in the right context. (In a modern farmhouse with lots of white? I don’t particularly like how they’re styled in the catalog.) The wood grain might get a little busy, so I’d be inclined to use white open shelving in lieu of upper cabinets. There are a few more new cabinet front styles listed online, but I still think IKEA is missing a huge opportunity by not offering unfinished, paintable options and timeless, classic designs like true shaker fronts.

pg. 66-67, 184 All the heart eyes for an organized pantry, especially the steel IVAR drawers and mini fridge.

pg. 82-83, 252 The transitional style of the MALSJÖ cabinet is so handsome. The recessed brass pulls are my favorite detail making this piece one of my top picks for 2017. I’d use it as a mini home library to corral books and albums or in a dining space to hold serveware, barware and alcohol.

pg. 88, 229 When I designed a nursery for my eldest (twelve years ago!) I used a PÖANG chair instead of a rocker and it worked great. I love the leather upholstery option.

pg. 108-109, 272 I’m all over those shapely FLÅDIS baskets.

pg. 116, 302 The FLISAT children’s series features practical storage in natural wood tones. Mabrey has the wall storage (not shown in the catalog, see it online) in her room.

pg. 124-125, 238 I spy flatwoven rugs made with jute, wool and sisal. They’re great for adding natural texture to any space. Priced affordably, they’re sure to be bestsellers.

boys bedroom after 2

pg. 129 Many of you have asked about the curved ceiling track I used for the boys’ bunk bed enclosure. It was discontinued but it looks like IKEA has improved the design. The new VIDGA series hugs closer to the ceiling and is white to blend in with most ceilings. (The older version sat a few inches off the ceiling and was silver.) A corner track is available to create enclosures and room dividers.

pg. 173 It isn’t new, but the BITTERGURKA plant pot is too cute not to mention. The small scale makes it perfect for growing herbs in the kitchen during cooler months.

pg. 190 I’ve always loved the classic and inexpensive kitchen linens at IKEA. The new VARDAGEN napkins and tablecloth are wonderful additions to the line. I’d use them for everything from everyday family meals to summer picnics to Thanksgiving dinner. So versatile!

pg. 207, 255, 273 I’m drawn to the muted colors and metal detailing of the FJÄLLA boxes. I like them paired with the fabric-covered KVARNVIK boxes for contrast.

pg. 221 The NOCKEBY sectional is good-looking and I like the practicality of a washable cover, but I need to give it a sit in person to determine how comfortable it is. The light beige and light gray upholstery options look promising.

pg. 248 The STILLHET tealight holders are so pretty.

pg. 319 The SLADDA bike is perfect for urban life and sleepy coastal towns. I love all the adorable accessories!

That’s my list. Truthfully, this year’s catalog isn’t my favorite. The staged rooms read a little too catalog, and some of the new things I’m normally excited to see (i.e., large furniture pieces, bedding, pillow covers, lighting, cabinet fronts, etc.) just weren’t there for me. (Although, I’m curious to see the EKBACKEN concrete lookalike laminate countertop in person.) Fortunately, many of my favorites are still available: STOCKHOLM sofa, MÖRBYLÅNGA dining table, the HEKTAR and SINNERLIG pendants, LAXARBY fronts…to name a few. I did appreciate the personal and behind-the-scenes stories woven throughout the catalog. I think it would be great if IKEA could somehow give the catalog more of a lived-in, lifestyle vibe. Maybe shoot even more in actual homes? I get the best ideas when IKEA products are mixed with vintage or bespoke items and shot within a real life scene. I enjoy catalogs that promote ideas alongside items. Just my two cents :)

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the newest IKEA catalog. Any favorite pieces?

I agree on it not being my favorite edition. Usually with the IKEA catalogs I will read and re-read over and over and over again. But I looked through this one and haven’t picked it up since. I used to read their online IKEA Live Family and that was always neat to see the IKEA pieces mixed into real homes that were featured but they discontinued it!

Thanks for this post. I also thought the 2017 (that I so anxiously awaited) was a dud. I too was expecting some new larger furniture and exciting textiles. The only thing that caught my eye is the MALSJÖ cabinet – and that’s about it. Buzzkill.

24.August.2016

I was so excited to see in the preview material that ikea released gray shaker style cabinet doors. I even held off buying a kitchen for my new house while the sale was going on, because I wanted to wait for these to come out. I was so disappointed when I discovered they were not in the American catalog, and are actually part of a different line of cabinets not sold in the U.S.

So I am with you in agreement that this is not one of Ikea’s best years.

24.August.2016

I’ve been getting the IKEA catalog since 1998. It’s gone through many changes over the last several years. I agree, I miss the stories it with how when the images were captured in a more homey environment. Not a fan of this catalog either. I do like some of the new products, but I feel like IKEA is in a transition once again with it’s style. It went from super modern when it first came to the states to appealing to a more traditional taste to this hybrid of multiple styles. I am still a big fan and always will be. I always seem to find something I like when I shop there.

I’m really interested to try out the VALLENTUNA sectional series in store. It’s not my favorite looking piece, but I’m thinking it’s super functional. I am working to transform a detached garage/storage building in my backyard into a guest house to rent on airbnb and I’m considering some kind of corner chair contraption that could fold into a twin bed for extra sleeping space. We shall see…

24.August.2016

This doesn’t have to do with the ikea catalog, but please blog about your daughters new bedroom reveal soon! Cant wait!

24.August.2016

I was kind of disappointed with this year’s catalog, they had way too much text with all the “interviews” and I wanted to see more whole house “stories” where they show multiple rooms from one house and they weave them together by using the same models and/or giving a hint of a room in the background. Anyway, they do have some great pieces by I like all the stories, they usually inspire me in multiple ways.

I immediately turned to the kitchen section when I got ours to see if they had added any new fronts! As someone who’s (whose?) budget can’t fit Semi-handmade (although I would love it!!) I think I’m gonna have to go with the Bodbyn to get gray cabinets. I thought Torhamn were actually decent looking in person but my husband thought they looked cheap. It’s too bad because I liked the simple shaker style and wished they offered it in more color options. Sigh…

24.August.2016

I couldn’t agree more with you. I wish IKEA would offer a true shaker front. I would be the first one in line to buy them.

24.August.2016

Interesting point about the catalog missing the lived-in, lifestyle vibe. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that around 75% of the catalog is generated using computer imagery and not real photo shoots. Here’s an article that talks about it: http://www.fastcodesign.com/3034975/75-of-ikeas-catalog-is-computer-generated-imagery.

The reasoning for this isn’t really explained in the article, but I’m guessing it’s a huge money saver. As someone who’s had a professional magazine shoot done in your home, you probably saw firsthand just how many people, hours, and dollars go into getting just a few perfect shots. Once you know this, looking through the catalog is even more interesting — trying to detect which images are from photo shoots and which are CG.

24.August.2016

Dana, I agree about the styling of the catalog – less “styled” and more REAL because what everyone loves about IKEA is how cool it looks with their non-IKEA stuff. Thank you for all your recommendations! I had fun looking up each one. :)

24.August.2016

I maaaay have let out a little squeal when the catalog showed up in the mail :) I totally agree on NORRARYD chairs. That style has been popping up everywhere recently, it seems, and I love the classic look, solid wood construction, and low price. I’m also digging the BARKABODA counterop. Overall the dining table options have improved SO much in recent years, and I liked a lot of the options they came out with the last year or two.

The catalog staging isn’t great, I agree. I also enjoy looking at a real life room and saying, “no way that’s IKEA!” but you lose that in the catalog. I get wanting to feature as much of the product as possible, but to me it reads a bit stale/cheap when it’s all IKEA all the time.

24.August.2016

I always like hearing your perspective on these things! Just curious, do you still have the studio space? We haven’t heard an update in ages– I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on there. :)

24.August.2016

I requested a catalog but I haven’t gotten one in the mail yet. I wonder if it will come or not?

I decided to follow along with the digital catalog you linked to, but unfortunately, they don’t seem to be the same catalog. Unless YOU can find the diy coffee table you seem to love on THIS page 24? (My screenshot: ) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/Bannacreampie/Screen%20Shot%202016-08-24%20at%208.23.52%20PM_zpsexddfcvz.png

Too bad. :(

24.August.2016

I’m with you…I wasn’t blown away by the catalog this year. It seemed very subdued compared to past catalogs. I’ve been a die-hard IKEA fan since they opened near Seattle several years ago. I was looking for a bit more inspiration in it’s pages. I guess that’s why I’m hooked on your blog…plenty to inspire me here! Yours was the first blog I ever read…it is a work of art between the great design and your awesome writing. Thank you for sharing your life and talent with us!

24.August.2016

Couldn’t agree more – love IKEA this years magazine is lacklustre it definitely reads like a catalogue – #disappointed

25.August.2016

links to these products are really necessary

25.August.2016

First, I am so thrilled that you didn’t post photos!!! There’s nothing like cracking open that catalogue for all the eye candy. Also, I have a question: How do you like the white metal bunk bed? Reviews I’ve read say the ladder hurts the feet. My daughter wants a loft bed, so I’m exploring options. Thanks!

25.August.2016

So the IKEA website isn’t letting me actually browse the catalog. Any way you can do links to the products you reference?

thank you so much for pulling this together! Really enjoy having your picks as a cheat sheet. Love the updated windsor dining chairs for sure. Thinking I might pair those with the MÖRBYLÅNGA. Open to other ideas too!

thx

26.August.2016

I felt the same way about the catalog too. Was hoping for a bit more inspiration. But, we have just ordered the Torhamn kitchen doors, planning to paint them Hague blue. Our painter uncle said it should be fine with a light sanding of the surface. So curious how it will turn out!

28.August.2016

Thanks for reminding me that the catalog is out!!! I will go and check it out, love Ikea and love your blog greetings from México!

28.August.2016

Great idea! I love the style of the TORHAMN doors. They’ll look great painted!

28.August.2016

Sounds like a plan!

28.August.2016

My boys haven’t complained about the ladder. It’s still working well for us. The only thing I would mention is that the top bunk squeaks ever so slightly when Layne climbs in.

28.August.2016

I’ve linked to most items within the post, but the narrative is really meant to accompany the actual catalog in hand as some items and ideas aren’t listed online. Hope that helps!

28.August.2016

28.August.2016

I’ve added links to most items within the post, but the narrative is really meant to accompany the actual catalog in hand as some items and ideas aren’t listed online. (Like that DIY coffee table.) I hope your real catalog arrives soon!

28.August.2016

I do and I will be sharing an update soon! The entire community there has changed for the better over the past year. New management has done a wonderful job of cleaning up and updating the warehouse while bringing in new and exciting tenants.

28.August.2016

I feel the same about seeing IKEA in a space and thinking “Really? That’s IKEA?!” Here’s hoping next year’s catalog features more lifestyle shots.

28.August.2016

I totally understand the reasoning (and cost/time-savings) behind the digital shoots. Just wish there were more real life shots for inspiration!

28.August.2016

I know…

28.August.2016

Yes! Next week!!

28.August.2016

Thanks for adding the links!

28.August.2016

You got it!

02.September.2016

I thought it was just me when I saw the catalog. A few fun things but nothing to shout about.

03.September.2016

I was wondering what your picks were going to be friend, I must say, like many before me mentioned, for the first time in many years I was pretty underwhelmed by the new catalog. I definitely have a few favs, but overall I wasn’t super impressed…..which pains me to say.:( I actually did a little vid on IG stories with my top picks. My top picks are: 1. the VALLENTUNA seating series. I think its a genius..especially for small spaces. 2. Love the KULLABERG desk. I think its super versatile. 3. the RIMFORSA work bench. Absolutely love this piece. If I didn’t already have a kitchen island cart, this would be my guy without a doubt. And that’s about it for me.

05.September.2016

I love that kitchen cart too!

10.September.2016

If you are just going to paint them you might want to go with the considerably cheaper Bjorket Birch. They are the same Shaker style but made of birch instead of the pricier ash.

11.September.2016

I am most excited about all of the new, neutral rugs. Rugs are such a pain on a tight budget! 5x7s only work in the tiniest of rooms, and 8x10s or larger are so much money! I like their punchy graphics but I also love their pieces that seamlessly blend in. Can’t wait to stop in and grab a huge sisal for my living room- and then layer something smaller and interesting over it.

12.September.2016

I would love to hear your thoughts on the concrete-effect countertops when you get a chance to look at them!

13.September.2016

I’ll be at the store tomorrrow, so I’ll check them out if they have some on display!

05.October.2016

Any thoughts on what the concrete-effect countertop looked/felt like? I’m very intrigued by these counterops as well and am dying to see them myself!

05.October.2016

Since scoping them out in the catalog, I checked out the EKBACKEN concrete effect countertops in person and I was really impressed! They have a great texture (not too ripply like some other laminate lookalikes I’ve seen) and I love the matte finish. I also like that they feature flat edges and a slimmer profile – 1 1/8″ vs. the standard 1 1/4″. The only problem I noticed is that IKEA doesn’t give instructions on how to finish a seam. The description tells you how to cut and finish the raw edges with the included edging strips, but it doesn’t mention finishing seams??? I’m sure there’s a you tube video out there somewhere or you could hire a professional for installation, but I do think IKEA should address the laminate seam thing.

All in all though, if I could find a way to finish off a seam (either DIY or via a professional), I would totally use them in a kitchen!
